FOR DIYers:

Precautions:

Before you begin:

  • We highly recommend to create a backup of your existing drive
  • First, and for all models:  If your old SSD or Hard Drive still works, or if you are going to install the drive as an upgrade; this is for you.   Please ensure that you have a Time Machine or alternative backup of your data.  Usually It is best to have a copy in the cloud or on an external drive.  Even better, you can create an image of the information if you place  your new drive into an external SSD enclosure or adapter first.  After that, connect it to your computer & use the Apple native app: Disk Utility or an alternative  software to create a clone.
  • Since for different reasons data could be lost, we do not recommend that anyone perform the SSD replacement without first taking time to create a backup of your data.  That being said, it’s up to you, but be careful.

TO EMPHASIZE:

  • TekDep does not ship SSD’s with any information on them, ever.  We wipe all used drives completely clean.   THIS MEANS YOU WILL NEED TO INSTALL AN OS.  IT IS NOT INCLUDED!
  • Even so, It is also an option to add the information to your new drive later.  If you place the old drive into an enclosure or use an adapter after removal,  installing the new one, then at that point you can begin to clone or transfer the data.
  • To be very clear, you should keep in mind that without a backup, it may be impossible to access the info at all if it does happen to be corrupted.  Again, BE CAREFUL!
  • There are different methods to get this done, so please be sure that you understand all of the steps involved before you get started.  That way you can have the best chance of a successful upgrade or replacement.
  • Lastly, make sure to disconnect the power supply, battery (if it has one) and all other external devices from your device.

Reccommended:

  • For the most part,  we recommend that you ground yourself to remove any static electricity. This can be done if you touch a grounded metal object or if you have access to one, you can wear an anti-static wristband.

Even though it is possible to perform this replacement without one, static electricity can cause damage that will be invisible to the naked eye and can ruin electronics.

  • Next, we recommend that you wear powder free nitrile gloves to prevent leaving the oils and or the residue from your skin on the internal components. Doing this can cause damage that may not become apparent right away but in many cases will grow over time.

During the process :

  • It is essential to keep track of the screws you remove and where they go to avoid mixing them up.  If you put the wrong screw in the wrong place or leave one loose somewhere inside of the device, it can cause extensive damage.  Also, it can break your device or one of its internal components so be careful!
  • Be gentle when you handle the SSD and other internal components, as things can be easily damaged.
  • Last but not least, If you’re not confident in your ability to complete this repair, seek help from a professional.

These are the required tools to replace or upgrade with a 512GB PCIe SSD for a variety of devices.  This includes the MacBook Pro Retina, MacBook Air and or specific Mac Pro Family Models:

It is good to have a complete toolkit on hand for any type of repair, just in case.

Important Note: For the above reasons, if it has one,  please make sure to disconnect the device from power and drain your laptop battery fully, first.  Once you unplug it, leave the devices power on until it shuts down.  Also, after you open it, disconnect the battery before you perform any repairs.

Lastly, to help protect you and your device you should always wear safety gear like glasses & anti-static nitrile gloves.

  1. Pentalobe screwdriver (P5): The bottom case on an Apple laptop uses a proprietary (Apple exclusive) type of screw called a Pentalobe screw.  Many repairs require this type of speciality screwdriver bit  to remove the bottom case and begin the repair.
  2. Torx screwdriver (T4 & T5): You will need Torx bits to remove the screws that hold the MacBook components such as the I/O Board, MagSafe port, Audio Board, Fans, TrackpadBattery & more.
  3. The T8 Torx screwdriver is used to remove the screws that hold the hinges of the LCD assembly in place.
  4. Plastic Spudger:  A plastic spudger helps get in between things and is useful to pry apart components with less risk of damage.  Additionally, you’ll need a spudger or plastic pry tool  like one you find in TekDep’s pro kit. Use it to help disconnect cables and connectors inside of your device as you need it.
  5. Anti-Static Tweezers: With respect to the screws, some of the connectors & many of the internal brackets are very small.  For this reason you’ll need a good pair of tweezers to disconnect and reconnect things or pick them up. Just as well, they can be a useful tool to hold on to things as you insert them back into place.

Final Note:
Sooner or later most electronics will require some maintenance or repair of some kind.   As time goes by there are more and more tutorials & videos available on the web that can guide you through the process.  Take advantage of that if you like to do things yourself.

While that is true, it is important to know that to work on a computer can be quite a challenge.

In general, you need to be very careful.  When you touch, disconnect or work on the internal parts of any electronic device be careful.   You don’t want to hurt yourself or damage the delicate components inside.

AGAIN,  if you haven’t done this before or aren’t comfortable to perform this type of repair, take your computer to a professional.   We here at TekDep want to help give you the best chance of success & the least risk of harm or damage.

Below, TekDep has put together a video to show the process of how to replace a PCIe SSD Hard Drive in a 15″ MacBook Pro Retina A1398.

Here is a teardown of the MAC PRO. It Can help replace the SSD on that device as well. Good Luck!
