FOR DIYers:
Required Tools ForĀ Repairs on aĀ 2012 13ā³ MacBook Air model A1466Ā FamilyĀ :
Note:Ā Before you begin, make sure to drain you laptop battery completely by disconnecting the power adapter & leave it on until the computer shuts down. Ā To ensure the least risk of shock to you or the internal printed circuit boards (PCBās), disconnect the battery before performing any repairs. Ā Typically, to help protect you and your device you should always wear safety glasses &Ā anti-static nitrile gloves.
- Pentalobe screwdriver (P5): TheĀ bottom caseĀ uses a proprietary (Apple exclusive) type of screw called a Pentalobe screw. Ā This type of speciality screwdriver is required to remove the bottom case and begin your repair.
- Torx screwdriver (T4 & T5): Torx bits are needed to remove the screws that hold the MacBook components such as theĀ I/O Board, MagSafe port, Audio PCB,Ā Fans,Ā Trackpad,Ā BatteryĀ & more.
- Torx screwdriver (T8): Ā The T8 Torx screwdriver is also needed to remove the screws that hold the hinges of theĀ LCD assemblyĀ in place.
- Plastic Spudger: Ā A plastic spudger is a tool that helps get in between things and useful to pry apart components with less risk of damaging them. Ā Additionally, youāll need a spudger orĀ plastic pry toolĀ like one found in TekDepās pro kit to disconnect some cables and connectors inside of your 13ā³ MacBook Air A1466.
- Anti-Static Tweezers: With respect to theĀ screws, some of theĀ connectors,Ā cablesĀ & many of the internal brackets are very small. Ā For this reason, youāll need a good pair of tweezers. Ā They are useful to disconnect or reconnect things, pick them up or gently move things out of the way. Ā Just as well, they can be a useful tool to hold on to things as they are inserted back into place.
Note:
Sooner or later most electronics will require some maintenance or a repair of some kind and as time goes by there are more and more tutorials & videos available on the web. Ā These can help guide you through the process of doing it for yourself.
While that is very true, it is important to be aware that working on a MacBook Air can be challenging.
In general,Ā you will need toĀ be very carefulĀ when opening, touching, handling, Ā disconnecting or working with the internal parts of any electronic device. Ā This is to avoid hurting yourself or damaging the delicate components inside. Be careful not to damage something else while you Ā try to replace a part. Just sayin…….
One more thing, if you havenāt done this kind of thing before or arenāt fully comfortable doing this type of thing, it’s always a better idea to take your MacBook Air to a professional. Ā This can give you the best chance of success & give you less risk of harm or damage.
