We’ll guide you step by step, using only the instructions given in the video, to ensure a clear and thorough understanding of the repair process. Whether you’re a DIY tech enthusiast or a first-time MacBook fixer, this guide will help you confidently swap out faulty fans and restore proper cooling to your device.

REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 1 to 1.5 HOURS to complete and is of INTERMEDIATE difficulty, requiring careful handling of internal cables and proper use of precision tools.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a Pentalobe screwdriver to remove the bottom case screws, a T5 Torx screwdriver to remove the fan screws, and a safe plastic tool or spudger to disconnect internal cables like the battery and Flex cables.

Remove the Bottom Case

  • Flip the MacBook over with the hinge pointed away from you.
  • Use a Pentalobe screwdriver to remove all screws securing the bottom case.
  • Lift and set the bottom case aside.

Disconnect the Battery

  • Locate the battery connector.
  • Carefully unplug the battery to ensure it’s safe to work on the MacBook.
  • This step prevents any power flow during the fan replacement.

Disconnect the IO Board Flex Cable

  • Identify the Flex cable connected to the IO board.
  • Gently unplug the Flex cable.
  • Set it aside, ensuring it’s not damaged during the process.

Disconnect Wi-Fi Antennas and Webcam

  • Find and unplug both Wi-Fi antenna connectors.
  • Unplug the webcam connector located nearby.
  • Set the disconnected cables away from the fan area.

Release CPU Fan Retention Bars

  • Open the small retention bars holding the CPU fans in place.
  • These secure the fan cables to the logic board.
  • Gently lift or flip them up to release.

Unscrew and Remove the CPU Fans

  • Use a T5 Torx screwdriver to remove the three screws from each fan.
  • Carefully lift the fans out of their slots.
  • Set the old fans aside for disposal or inspection.

Install New Fans

  • Plug in the new fan cable before seating the fan itself.
  • Gently lay the fans into their correct positions.
  • This ensures less stress on the cable and easier alignment.

Secure the New Fans

  • Use the T5 screwdriver to screw each fan back into place.
  • Make sure all three screws per fan are tightened evenly.
  • Confirm the fans are seated securely.

Reroute and Reconnect Cables

  • Route the cables through the original cable management clips on the left-hand side.
  • Plug in the webcam connector.
  • Reconnect the Wi-Fi antennas.

Reconnect the IO Board Flex and Battery

  • Plug the IO board Flex cable back into its port.
  • Reconnect the battery connector carefully.
  • Ensure all cables are firmly seated.

Reinstall Bottom Case

  • Before closing, double-check all components are connected properly.
  • If any rubber grommets or internal elements were removed, replace them.
  • Place the bottom case back on and screw it into place using the Pentalobe screwdriver.

Test the MacBook

  • Flip the MacBook over and connect the charger.
  • Wait for the orange charging light indicator.
  • Power on the machine—if the Apple logo appears, the fans are installed correctly.

CONCLUSION:

Fan replacement on the MacBook Pro A1398 (2015) is a straightforward process if you follow each step carefully. Disconnecting power and internal cables properly ensures a safe repair environment. Replacing fans can greatly improve system cooling and performance. Always verify installation by powering on the device and confirming the fan operation.
