REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 2 to 3 hours to complete and is of moderate difficulty, requiring patience, careful prying, and basic screwdriver handling skills.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

You will need a Torx screwdriver set, a plastic pry tool, and tweezers for cable removal. Optional tools include an anti-static mat and alcohol wipes for cleaning thermal paste.

Remove Bottom Panel

  • Start by removing the screws securing the bottom panel.
  • Once unscrewed, lift the bottom cover off and set it aside.
  • This exposes the internals for further disassembly.

Disconnect Battery Cable

  • Peel off the plastic shield covering the motherboard.
  • Carefully pull the battery cable out from its port.
  • The battery connector is clearly labeled and pulls straight back.

Remove the Battery

  • Unscrew the screws holding the battery in place.
  • Gently lift and remove the battery from the chassis.
  • Set the battery aside safely.

Remove SSD

  • Identify the SSD nestled between the battery cells.
  • Pull the SSD out carefully without damaging the board.
  • Place it aside for reinstallation later.

Remove Rear Panel Over Motherboard

  • Unscrew the back panel that’s over the motherboard.
  • Slide it out—note that one side hooks in.
  • Disconnect the LED controller cable before removing fully.

Peel Off Protective Film

  • Peel back the protective film from the motherboard.
  • This will give a clear view of the internal components.
  • Note the large dual-fan and heat pipe setup.

Remove Both Fans

  • Disconnect fan cables and peel off any adhesive holding them.
  • Lift each fan unit carefully from its placement.
  • Set fans aside for cleaning or replacement.

Disconnect Daughterboards

  • Identify and disconnect ribbon cables connecting daughterboards.
  • Each daughterboard has individual screws to remove.
  • Set aside the daughterboards separately.

Disconnect Peripheral Cables

  • Detach all cables still connected to the motherboard.
  • Some cables may be stuck with adhesive—gently peel them away.
  • Ensure all cables are clear before lifting the board.

Remove Motherboard

  • Unscrew all screws securing the motherboard.
  • Gently lift and wiggle the board out of place.
  • Disconnect any bottom cables as you remove it.

Disconnect Display Assembly

  • Flip the laptop to access hinge screws from the top.
  • Unscrew four screws on each side of the hinge.
  • Unhook antenna and display cables from plastic clips.

Remove Screen

  • Once screws and cables are detached, remove the screen.
  • Set it aside for replacement or inspection.
  • You now have a bare top case.

Remove Speakers

  • Trace speaker cable through its groove.
  • Gently lift out the speaker units.
  • Set aside for replacement or reuse.

Remove Daughterboard and Power Connector

  • Disconnect ribbon cables from the side daughterboard.
  • Unscrew and remove power connector and bracket.
  • Set both components aside.

Remove Power Button

  • Disconnect taped-down ribbon for the power button.
  • Remove the bracket and lift the power button out.
  • Place it safely aside.

Final Cable Cleanup

  • Remove any remaining disconnected cables.
  • Set aside loose cables for reassembly.
  • You’re now ready to inspect or repair individual components.

Remove Heat Sink

  • Unscrew heat sink screws from the motherboard.
  • Gently lift the heat sink; thermal paste may resist removal.
  • Clean thermal paste off the CPU/GPU with alcohol wipes.

CONCLUSION:

That concludes the full teardown of the Alienware M15 R2. Every component is now individually accessible for inspection, repair, or replacement. Be sure to keep your screws organized and follow this guide in reverse for reassembly. If you’re reusing thermal components, don’t forget to apply new thermal paste.
