REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 1 HOUR to complete and is of INTERMEDIATE difficulty, requiring careful handling of internal components and connectors.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a T5 Torx screwdriver to remove the external screws, a plastic spudger for disconnecting internal components without damage, and possibly tweezers for handling smaller connectors. A clean, static-free surface is also recommended for working safely on the device.

Remove the Bottom Case

  • Use a T5 Torx screwdriver to remove the 10 screws located around the perimeter and top of the bottom case.
  • Place the screws in a safe container to avoid losing them.
  • Gently lift the bottom cover off the unit to expose the internal components.

Disconnect and Remove the Battery

  • Locate the battery connector on the left side of the motherboard and unlatch it carefully.
  • Remove the six screws holding the battery in place.
  • Lift the battery out of the chassis and set it aside.

Remove the M.2 SSD

  • Identify the SSD and remove the single screw securing it.
  • Slide the SSD out of its slot gently.
  • Store the SSD in an anti-static bag if you’re replacing it or working further.

Disconnect and Remove the Wi-Fi Card

  • Unplug the Wi-Fi antenna cables from the Wi-Fi card.
  • Remove the screw holding the card in place.
  • Slide the Wi-Fi card out of its slot.

Remove the Left and Right Speakers

  • Unscrew the two screws on each side securing the speakers.
  • Disconnect the speaker wire from the motherboard.
  • Pull out both left and right speakers carefully.

Disconnect the Webcam and Microphone

  • Find the webcam and microphone connector on the left side of the motherboard.
  • Gently unplug the connector to free the cable.
  • Ensure the cable is untangled before setting it aside.

Detach the Wi-Fi Cables

  • Untangle the Wi-Fi antenna cables from the right side of the unit.
  • Carefully pull the cables away from the chassis.
  • This prepares them for motherboard removal.

Remove the BIOS Speaker (Optional)

  • Unplug the BIOS speaker wire from its connector.
  • Lift the speaker out from under the tape cover.
  • Only complete this step if BIOS speaker replacement is needed.

Disconnect the LCD Connector

  • Locate the LCD connector under a protective tape.
  • Unlatch the connector and pull it away from the motherboard.
  • Ensure it’s fully detached before proceeding.

Remove Side Covers

  • Unscrew the six screws securing the left and right side covers of the unit.
  • Remove both covers to gain full access to the motherboard.
  • Set the screws and covers aside carefully.

Unplug the Ribbon Cables from the Motherboard

  • Locate the ribbon cables on both the right and left of the motherboard.
  • Lift the retention bars and gently pull each ribbon cable out.
  • Take extra care not to tear or damage the cables.

Remove Screws Holding the Motherboard

  • Remove four screws securing the motherboard in place.
  • Keep track of each screw location for reassembly.
  • Prepare to lift the board once all cables and screws are cleared.

Remove GPU and CPU Cooling Fan Screws

  • Unscrew the five screws securing the GPU and CPU cooling fans.
  • These fans are connected to the motherboard and will be removed together.
  • Ensure no wires are snagged during removal.

Disconnect CPU and GPU Fan Connectors

  • Locate the fan connectors on either side of the motherboard.
  • Gently unplug both connectors to free the fans from the board.
  • Confirm all cables are detached before lifting the board.

Remove the Motherboard and Cooling Fans

  • Lift the motherboard and attached cooling fans out of the unit.
  • If the fans snag, gently guide them out from the sides.
  • Alternatively, fans can be removed first, but this teardown removes them as one unit.

Detach the LCD Assembly

  • Remove six screws from the hinges at the top of the unit.
  • Open the laptop to about 15 degrees past 90 degrees.
  • Separate the top case from the hinges to release the LCD assembly.
