How to Replace the Battery on a 13″ MacBook Pro A2251 (2020 Model) – Step-by-Step Guide

OVERVIEW:

In this repair guide, we walk through the step-by-step battery replacement for a 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro model A2251—one of the final Intel-based models before Apple’s transition to the M-series chips. This unit was mailed in specifically for a failing battery. The process includes safe disassembly, adhesive removal, and installing a new battery with proper alignment. Whether you’re a DIYer or just looking to understand the internal structure, this tutorial offers a complete teardown and reassembly process. Follow along for a detailed and careful walkthrough.

REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 1 to 1.5 HOURS to complete and is of INTERMEDIATE difficulty, requiring moderate technical skill with handling internal components and safely removing strong adhesive.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a Pentalobe screwdriver to remove the outer case screws, a suction cup for lifting the bottom cover, a T5 and T3 screwdriver to remove internal screws, isopropyl alcohol (98% or higher) to loosen battery adhesive, a flat-edge pry tool or plastic spudger for battery removal, and tweezers or a spudger to manage flex cables safely.

Remove Bottom Case Screws

  • Use a Pentalobe screwdriver to unscrew the screws from the bottom of the MacBook.
  • Place a suction cup on the lower cover and lift gently to create separation.
  • Slide the bottom cover downward to release the internal clips.

Disconnect Battery Management Flex Cable

  • Peel off the plastic cover over the battery connector.
  • Use a T5 screwdriver to remove the pancake screw connecting the flex cable to the board.
  • Safely disconnect the battery management unit to ensure there is no power to the logic board.

Remove Trackpad Flex Cable

  • Use a T3 screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the trackpad cable retention bar.
  • Unplug the trackpad flex cable and gently peel it off the battery.
  • Tuck the cable out of the way to prevent interference during battery removal.

Apply Isopropyl Alcohol to the Adhesive

  • Drip isopropyl alcohol (98% or higher) around all battery cells to loosen the adhesive.
  • Allow time for the alcohol to break down the adhesive underneath the battery.
  • Apply more alcohol as needed—it’s safe in moderate quantities.

Remove Battery from Case

  • Use a flat-edge pry tool to carefully lift each section of the battery starting from any edge.
  • Gently work under the battery cells one at a time to avoid damaging the trackpad below.
  • Once free, remove the battery and discard it safely.

Clean Remaining Adhesive

  • Apply more alcohol over remaining adhesive strips.
  • Use a metal spudger to scrape off the residue until the case is completely clean.
  • Ensure no debris is left behind that could interfere with the new battery installation.

Install New Battery

  • Align the new battery using the central alignment bar and two screw posts.
  • Attach the outer sections first, then press the entire battery down firmly for adhesion.
  • Peel off any protective plastic films from the battery surface.

Secure Battery Board and Flex Cable

  • Use T5 screws to secure the battery daughterboard to the chassis.
  • Use a spudger to open the retention clips on the flex cable connectors.
  • Connect the smaller end of the cable to the daughterboard and the larger end to the logic board, then close the retention bars.

Reconnect the Trackpad Cable

  • Plug the trackpad cable back into the logic board.
  • Stick it down gently to the new battery surface to keep it in place.
  • Reinstall the trackpad retention bracket using the original T3 screws.

Reinstall Protective Covers

  • Place the plastic cover back over the battery management cable area.
  • This ensures the cable remains secure and doesn’t touch other components.

Reinstall Bottom Cover

  • Align the bottom case by inserting the upper tabs one side at a time.
  • Press down to snap the cover into place.
  • Use the Pentalobe screwdriver to reinsert the screws—the two longest go at the top corners.

Test the Repair

  • Flip the MacBook over, connect a charger, and power on the device.
  • Confirm that it turns on and the battery level is reported correctly.
  • If everything checks out, the replacement was successful.

CONCLUSION:

Replacing the battery in the 2020 MacBook Pro A2251 involves careful disassembly, safe adhesive removal, and precise reassembly of internal components. With patience and the right tools, this repair can be done at home. Always double-check connections and alignment before sealing the MacBook. If you’re unsure, consider using a professional service. Following the steps above ensures a smooth and successful repair.
