Tools You Need
For this repair, you will need a heating mat set between 70 to 90 degrees Celsius, a T3, T5, T6, T8, T9, and T10 Torx screwdriver set, a Phillips screwdriver (1.5mm), a plastic card for safe adhesive removal, isopropyl alcohol to loosen adhesive, a plastic spudger for prying components without damage, tweezers for handling small connectors, and a suction cup for lifting the bottom case.

Detach Bottom Case

Remove Power Supply
- Using the T9 bit, remove two screws securing the power supply motherboard bus.

Extract Internal Frame Plate
- Remove eight T6 black screws securing the internal frame; note the smaller centermost screw.
- Lift out the internal frame plate and set it aside.

Disconnect Power Supply Signal Cable
- Unplug the power supply signal cable from the motherboard.
- Use a T9 bit to remove two screws holding the power supply bus connector to the motherboard.

Detach Wi-Fi Antenna Cables
- Using tweezers or a pry tool, unplug the three Wi-Fi antenna cables on the right side.
- The bottom cable is secured with a T5 screw; remove it before unplugging.

Remove Wi-Fi Antennas
- With the T5 bit, unscrew the two screws holding each of the two removable Wi-Fi antennas.
- Leave the third antenna attached; it will be removed with the cooling unit later.

Unplug Cooling Fan Flex Cables
- Use tweezers to unlatch and unplug the cooling fan flex cables from both sides of the motherboard.

Remove SSD
- With a T8 bit, unfasten the m.2 SSD.
- Peel off the thermal pad taped to the top; it may require gentle force.

Detach Front Panel I/O
- Use a T5 bit to remove screws holding the Type-C connectors and SD card reader to the housing.
- Employ a T3 bit to remove flex cable covers from the ports and motherboard.
- Disconnect the flex cables from the logic board before removing the ports.
- Unplug the flex cable on the SD card reader that connects to the hard drive activity light.

Remove Rear I/O Components
- Unscrew four T6 screws securing the power supply plug, which also holds the I/O boards.
- For the Ethernet port, remove two T5 screws; the flex cable cover will come off with them.
- Unplug the underlying flex cable and remove the Ethernet port.
- Switch to a T3 bit to remove two screws securing the flex cable from the Ethernet port to the main board.

Detach Thunderbolt 4 Ports
- Unfasten T5 screws at the top and bottom of each Thunderbolt port.
- Remove two T3 screws holding the flex cables to the motherboard.
- Unplug the flex cables; the ports are now ready for removal.

Remove the Remaining Rear I/O
- Start by removing the internal speaker: unfasten two T5 screws and unplug the speaker wire beneath.
- Access and remove two T9 standoffs securing the rear I/O panel.
- Unplug the power button flex cable from the board on the right side.
- Use a T3 bit to remove two screws holding the retention bracket over the flex cables.
- With a T5 bit, unscrew the last two screws holding the board in place.
- Unplug the flex cables connecting the board to the main board; remove the right rear I/O board and power plug.

Final Wi-Fi Antenna Removal
- Unfasten the remaining T5 screws holding the final Wi-Fi antenna.
- This step can be done earlier, but leaving it until now prevents interference during previous steps.

Detach Cooling Unit
- Using a T10 bit, unscrew the four points securing the cooling unit to the motherboard.
- Loosen screws in a cross pattern to avoid damaging the SoC die.
- After screws are free, the mounting bracket will pop up and fall off.

Remove Motherboard
- Switch to a T8 bit to remove four screws along the motherboard’s perimeter.
- Lift the motherboard out of the housing and separate it from the unit.
- Flip the logic board to view the M1 Max chip.

Disassemble the Cooling Unit
- Unscrew four T10 screws securing the cooling unit to the housing.
- Tilt the front (intake and fan section) upwards first to remove the unit.
- Remember, the final Wi-Fi antenna is part of this assembly and will be removed now.

Remove Cooling Fans and Final Wi-Fi Antenna
- Unfasten three T9 screws (one on each side and one in the middle) to remove the two cooling fans.
- Access and remove T5 screws holding the third Wi-Fi antenna.
