REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:
This repair is estimated to take about 2 HOURS to complete and is of INTERMEDIATE difficulty, requiring basic knowledge of internal components and careful handling of delicate cables and adhesives.

STEPS:
Tools You Need
For this repair, you will need a T5 Torx screwdriver, a plastic spudger for disconnecting cables and prying components, isopropyl alcohol to loosen adhesive residue, cotton swabs or paper towels for cleaning, and a flat-edged scraping tool to remove leftover adhesive. A pentalobe screwdriver is also required to reseal the bottom panel.
Remove the Battery Connection Plate
- Use a T5 screwdriver to remove the two screws securing the retention plate.
- This plate covers the I/O board and trackpad flex cables.
- Removing this gives access to disconnect both cables safely.

Disconnect the Trackpad Flex Cable
- Use a spudger to gently pop up the trackpad cable connector.
- Flip up the small tape cover and then lift the retention bar.
- Pull out the ribbon cable gently from its socket.

Disconnect the I/O Board Flex and Speaker Cables
- Disconnect the I/O board flex cable.
- Disconnect the left and right speaker cables underneath and to the side of the I/O board.
- This ensures the battery can be removed cleanly.

Remove the Left and Right Speakers
- Use a T5 screwdriver to remove three screws from each speaker.
- Note: One screw may be missing if previously tampered with.
- Gently pull the speakers out—one may be stuck under the misaligned battery.

Remove the Battery Connector Screw
- Use the T5 screwdriver to remove the screw holding the battery connector board.
- This allows the battery to be safely pried out afterward.

Carefully Pry Out the Battery Cells
- Due to fire risk, do not use isopropyl alcohol in this step.
- Use a flat-edge spudger to gently lift out the left and right battery cells.
- Then work on prying up the center battery cell, starting from the top if easier.

Inspect Battery Damage
- Observe that the short likely happened near the battery connector.
- The PCB is visibly cracked, indicating intense heat and shorting.
- Avoid using poorly sourced or low-quality replacement batteries.

Clean Fire Residue and Debris
- Use a paper towel and a small amount of isopropyl alcohol to clean the bottom case.
- Wipe down the logic board, being cautious of residue with conductive ions.
- Use Q-tips or cotton swabs for detailed cleaning around components.

Remove Old Adhesive Strips
- Soak the adhesive areas with isopropyl alcohol to loosen the bond.
- Use a scraping tool to remove adhesive residue from the top case thoroughly.
- This preps the surface for installing the new battery.

Reinstall the Left and Right Speakers
- Begin reassembly by screwing the speakers back into place.
- These act as alignment guides for installing the new battery.
- Only install one screw for each speaker initially for easy adjustments.

Install the New Battery
- Peel off the protective cover from the new battery.
- Slide the battery under both speakers and align it precisely.
- Adjust positioning using a spudger before pressing it into place.

Secure the Battery Connector and Speakers
- Use the T5 screwdriver to reinstall the screw on the battery connector board.
- Finish screwing down both speakers securely.
- Plug in the right speaker cable.

Reconnect I/O Board and Trackpad Flex
- Plug the left speaker cable underneath the I/O board.
- Reconnect the I/O board cable.
- Slide in the trackpad ribbon cable, lower the retention bar, and reseal the tape flap.

Reinstall the Battery Retention Plate
- Position the retention plate back over the connectors.
- Secure it with the two T5 screws.

Test Charging and Power-On
- Connect the battery connector and place the protective sticker back down.
- Plug in the charging cable and check for an amber light.
- Open the MacBook and verify that it powers on and boots to the desktop.

Reinstall Bottom Panel
- Use a pentalobe screwdriver to secure the screws along the bottom panel.
- Give the unit a final cleaning before concluding the repair.
