REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 1.5 TO 2 HOURS to complete and is of INTERMEDIATE difficulty, requiring careful handling of delicate connectors and confident use of tools like screwdrivers and prying tools.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a Pentalobe screwdriver, a T3 and T5 Torx screwdriver, a suction cup to remove the bottom case, isopropyl alcohol to loosen the battery adhesive, a plastic pry tool to lift components safely, and tweezers if you’re lucky enough to have intact pull tabs on your battery.

Remove Bottom Case

  • Flip the MacBook Pro over and remove all eight Pentalobe screws securing the bottom case.
  • Use a suction cup to gently lift and remove the bottom case without damaging it.
  • Set the bottom case aside and proceed with internal disassembly.

Disconnect Trackpad Flex Cable

  • Using a T3 screwdriver, remove the two screws holding the trackpad flex cable retention bracket.
  • Lift the bracket and use a plastic pry tool to unplug the trackpad flex cable.
  • Carefully peel the flex cable back to expose the components below.

Disconnect Battery Management Unit Cable

  • Gently unplug the battery management unit flex cable.
  • Peel the cable up from the adhesive securing it to the MacBook’s interior.
  • Fully disconnect the cable so it can be transferred to the new battery later.

Disconnect Jumper to Battery Daughter Board

  • Use a T5 screwdriver to remove the screw securing the jumper from the logic board to the battery daughter board.
  • Though optional, removing this is highly recommended to avoid any electrical issues during repair.
  • Carefully lift and isolate the connector once removed.

Remove Trackpad Screws

  • With the T5 screwdriver, remove all screws holding the trackpad in place.
  • This includes five screws on each side and three in the middle.
  • Once screws are out, open the MacBook and slide the trackpad out gently.

Soak Battery with Isopropyl Alcohol

  • Apply isopropyl alcohol generously over the battery cells to loosen the adhesive.
  • Let it sit while other components are removed or prepared for reinstallation.
  • This softening step makes battery removal much easier and safer.

Remove Battery Board Screws

  • Return to the battery board and remove the two central T5 screws.
  • These screws anchor the battery board in place and must be removed for battery extraction.
  • Apply more alcohol on side cells if needed for adhesive loosening.

Pry Out the Battery

  • Use a flat plastic pry tool to gently lift each cell at a shallow angle.
  • Avoid using metal tools or sharp angles to prevent punctures and potential fires.
  • Carefully detach the battery, working around any areas where pull tabs failed.

Understanding Pull Tab Locations

  • Typical pull tab locations include the outer edges of each battery cell and the central area beneath the trackpad.
  • If tabs remain intact, tweezers can be used to pull them out safely and easily.
  • If tabs snap, continue using isopropyl alcohol and a plastic pry tool as demonstrated.

Remove Old Battery

  • Once loosened, lift the battery entirely out of the device.
  • Set the old battery aside safely and prepare your replacement unit.
  • Confirm your new battery matches the layout and design of the original.

Install New Battery

  • Peel off the adhesive strip covers on the new battery cells.
  • Align the battery cells accurately with their designated slots in the chassis.
  • Press each section into place starting from the top half of the MacBook.

Secure Battery Board Screws

  • Use T5 screwdriver to reinstall the two screws securing the battery board.
  • Ensure the board is aligned correctly before tightening down.
  • These screws lock the battery’s electrical connection into place.

Reinstall Trackpad

  • Reopen the MacBook and carefully set the trackpad back into its housing.
  • Make sure it’s properly aligned before inserting screws.
  • Reinstall all trackpad screws in the same order and position they were removed.

Reconnect Battery Management Flex Cable

  • Plug the first end of the flex cable into the new battery.
  • Connect the other end into the logic board, ensuring a snug and proper fit.
  • Avoid folding or forcing the cable, which could cause damage.

Reconnect Trackpad Flex Cable

  • Plug the trackpad flex cable back into its connector.
  • Use the T3 screwdriver to reinstall the retention bracket securely over the flex cable.
  • Confirm the cable is firmly connected and bracketed in place.

Power Test Before Final Assembly

  • Wipe off any internal dust to maintain a clean environment.
  • Plug in the charger and power on the device before sealing the MacBook.
  • Verify battery detection and charging functionality are working as expected.

Reattach Bottom Case

  • Once confirmed, place the bottom case back onto the MacBook.
  • Remember: the top four Pentalobe screws are longer than the bottom four.
  • Tighten all screws in the correct positions to complete the repair.
