MSI Workstation WS65 8SK: Repair Guide and Teardown

Disassemble an MSI Laptop

Hey guys, today we have an MSI Workstation laptop to disassemble and work through. This particular model is equipped with 32GB RAM, an 8th Generation Intel i9 Core, 512GB of SSD storage, and an NVIDIA Quadro P3200. If you see any parts or tools you might need for this repair, or any others, click here.

Before we Begin

The MSI Workstation WS65 8SK is a workstation specifically designed for professional workloads. It boasts an impressive combination of an Intel Core i9 and 32GB of RAM, making it ideal for intensive tasks such as video editing, 3D rendering, and engineering simulations.

However, it’s important to consider some of the trade-offs that come with such powerful hardware. One of the main drawbacks of the WS65 8SK is its substantial power consumption. Due to the nature of its components and the demands placed on them, this workstation tends to consume a significant amount of power. As a result, its battery life may be shorter compared to other laptops on the market.

Additionally, the powerful components in the WS65 8SK make quite a bit of heat. To prevent overheating and ensure proper functioning, the laptop comes with robust cooling abilities, including multiple fans. While efficient, these fans can be audible during intensive work sessions, potentially causing some noise disturbance.

Moreover, the continuous usage of high-performance components under heavy stress may accelerate the wear and tear of certain laptop components. For instance, the battery might experience shorter life over time, leading to reduced battery life. Additionally, the fans may experience wear, which can impact their performance in the long run.

Opening it Up

Disassemble an MSI Laptop Internals

As you look inside the case and remove the cover, the first thing you’ll notice is the lack of an obvious heat sink, RAM, and SSD. The main board on this model is installed sort of “upside down” as compared to most common modern laptops, making this MSI workstation a bit different to disassemble. The components are facing up, towards the keyboard rather than down to the bottom of the device.

Aside from this, it is still a laptop and everything is laid out in a standard fashion. Start by disconnecting and removing the battery, and from here you can either remove the motherboard first or the display. I’ll start by disconnecting the ribbon connectors to pull out the motherboard first.

Taking Out the Boards

Disassemble an MSI Laptop Motherboard

Once the cables are disconnected, there are just a couple screws holding the motherboard in. Go ahead and unscrew them, and you can pull the board and heatsink assembly together up and out. When you get it out and flipped over, you’ll see that this laptop does in fact have a pretty large heat sink assembly, with three fans all working to keep it cool as it runs.

You’ll also see that it has two SO-DIMM RAM slots as well as two m.2 SSD ports. This model supports up to 64GB of RAM, in two 32GB modules, and the space for a second SSD means it is very simple to greatly expand the storage available. The SO-DIMM RAM and m.2 SSD are the standard design and can be easily removed for disassembly.

Removing the Screen

Disassemble an MSI Laptop Display

Now for the screen, the final part of this MSI laptop disassembly. It is a pretty typical hinge design, with 3 screws per side. When you are actually removing it, keep in mind that there is a plastic cover piece on the top case that you will need to remove before the screen can be taken off. Also of note, the antennae in this model are not in the display assembly, instead they sit between the hinges. Once the plastic cover is removed you will see them, and the screen can now easily be removed.

Finishing Up

Top Case

Now that the motherboard and screen assembly are removed, all that you are left with is the keyboard, mouse pad, and power button in the top case. On this model, they are all held in place with plastic rather than screws. I would recommend not taking them apart as it will generally not be possible to put it back together. If you do need to replace the keyboard, it would require a complete top case assembly.
