13” MacBook Pro A1278 (2011) – Cracked Trackpad & Swollen Battery Replacement Guide

OVERVIEW:

In this repair tutorial, we walk through replacing both the battery and trackpad on a MacBook Pro A1278 (Late 2011). This unit came in with a severely swollen battery that cracked the trackpad from pressure underneath—two common issues that often occur together. We’ll show you how to safely remove the damaged components and install new parts step-by-step. Whether you’re experiencing swelling, charging issues, or a non-functioning trackpad, this guide will help you resolve them both using safe and effective methods.

REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 45 minutes to 1 hour to complete and is of INTERMEDIATE difficulty, requiring safe handling of internal components, screw management, and precise alignment during reinstallation.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a Phillips screwdriver, a Tri-Wing screwdriver, a T5 Torx driver, and a plastic spudger. These tools are essential for removing the bottom panel, battery, and trackpad components safely and efficiently.

Flip Over the MacBook and Identify the Model

  • Start by flipping the unit over to expose the bottom panel.
  • This MacBook Pro A1278 (Late 2011) uses Phillips head screws—not pentalobe like modern models.
  • Identify and prepare to remove all visible screws securing the bottom panel.

Remove the Bottom Panel

  • Use your Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws holding the bottom panel in place.
  • Carefully lift off the panel to expose the internal components.
  • You can now clearly see the swollen battery—it’s raised and pressing against the top case.

Disconnect the Swollen Battery

  • Begin by unplugging the battery connector from the logic board using a plastic spudger.
  • Take your Tri-Wing screwdriver to remove the two visible screws holding the battery.
  • There’s a hidden third screw near the hard drive or SSD—remove that as well.

Remove and Safely Dispose of the Battery

  • As you remove the screws, the battery may physically begin to open due to swelling.
  • Remove the battery slowly and carefully.
  • Place it in a bucket of sand or another fire-safe container for proper disposal.

Disconnect and Remove the Trackpad Flex Cable

  • With the battery out, you now have access to the trackpad.
  • Lift the retention bar securing the flex cable.
  • Gently unplug and peel the flex cable from the trackpad.

Remove Trackpad Mounting Screws

  • Use a small Phillips (P0) to remove the black and silver screws securing the trackpad.
  • There are two black screws in the middle and two silver ones on each side.
  • Also remove the T5 Torx screw at the bottom—this secures the center post of the trackpad.

Remove the Damaged Trackpad

  • After all screws are removed, open the top case slightly.
  • The cracked trackpad will fall out on its own or can be gently pushed through.
  • Inspect the damage—it likely cracked from upward pressure due to battery swelling.

Prepare and Align the New Trackpad

  • Grab your replacement trackpad and orient it correctly.
  • Look for the center nub—this aligns with the hole where the T5 screw goes.
  • Also line up the two mounting tabs on either end of the top case.

Reconnect the Trackpad Flex Cable

  • Feed the flex cable through and plug it into the connector.
  • Press firmly until the white dotted alignment line disappears.
  • Close the retention bar while holding the cable in place.

Reinstall Trackpad Screws

  • Begin by reinstalling the two black screws in the center-top bracket.
  • Next, reinstall the two silver screws on either side of the bracket.
  • Finish by reinstalling the T5 screw at the bottom center post.
  • Tighten all screws snugly but not overly tight, or the trackpad click will be affected.

Install the New Battery

  • Unbox the replacement battery and remove any protective covers.
  • Slide the battery into the tray, ensuring it lays flat and aligns with screw holes.
  • Use your Tri-Wing screwdriver to install the three screws—tighten them just until snug.

Reconnect Battery and Reassemble Unit

  • Plug the battery connector back into the board.
  • Reinstall the bottom panel onto the unit.
  • Use your Phillips screwdriver to reinstall the screws.
  • Remember: the three longest screws go at the top, and the rest are all the same size.

Power On and Verify Repair

  • Flip the MacBook back over and plug in the charger.
  • Look for a green light to indicate connection, and orange light for charging.
  • The unit powers on—check that the battery is charging and the trackpad clicks normally.

CONCLUSION:

Replacing both the battery and trackpad on the MacBook Pro A1278 is a straightforward but careful process. The swollen battery caused visible damage to the trackpad, but both were easily replaced using the proper tools. With everything reassembled and working, this MacBook is back to being fully functional.
