REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 1.5 TO 2 HOURS to complete and is of INTERMEDIATE difficulty, requiring careful handling of flex cables and familiarity with internal MacBook components.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a Pentalobe P5 screwdriver, Torx T5 and T8 screwdrivers, and a plastic spudger tool (recommended but optional). All of these tools can be found in a complete toolkit on our website or listed in the video description.

Remove Bottom Case

  • Use the P5 Pentalobe screwdriver to remove the 10 screws from the back of the MacBook Air.
  • Slide your fingers under the bottom case and gently pull it back to detach it from the chassis.
  • Carefully lift the entire bottom panel away to expose the internals.

Disconnect Battery

  • Locate the battery connector and disconnect it from the logic board to prevent electrical damage.
  • This ensures a safer working environment during the rest of the disassembly.

Remove Battery

  • Use the T5 screwdriver to unscrew the five screws securing the battery to the chassis.
  • Gently lift and remove the battery from the MacBook.
  • Hold the power button for 10 seconds to discharge any residual energy from the board.

Disconnect I/O Flex Cable

  • Gently remove the I/O flex cable connecting the I/O board to the logic board.
  • Be sure to pull carefully to avoid damaging the cable or its connectors.

Disconnect I/O Power Cable

  • Locate the I/O power cable and pull it back from the logic board connector housing.

Disconnect iSight Camera Cable

  • Gently pull back the iSight camera cable from the logic board.
  • Use minimal force to avoid stressing the cable.

Disconnect Fan and Trackpad Flex Cables

  • Unlock the fan connector mechanism and remove its flex cable.
  • Unlock the trackpad connector on the logic board and disconnect its flex cable.
  • Then unlock the connector on the trackpad side and remove that end of the flex cable as well.

Disconnect Keyboard Backlight Cable

  • Unlock the keyboard backlight connector and remove the flex cable from the logic board.

Disconnect Left Speaker

  • Disconnect the left speaker cable from the logic board.

Disconnect Display Cable

  • Pull up the plastic lock on the display cable, then gently slide it out flat to avoid damaging the pins.
  • A plastic tool can be used to assist in pushing the cable back gently.

Disconnect Wi-Fi Antennas

  • Use your plastic tool to apply a bit of pressure beneath the golden antenna tips.
  • This helps detach them without damage—then move the cables aside.

Remove Fan Rubber Gasket

  • Gently remove and lift away the fan rubber gasket from the CPU fan.

Disconnect the Right Speaker and Microphone

  • Unplug the right speaker cable from the board.
  • Unlock the microphone connector, then gently pull the flex cable to remove.

Remove SSD

  • Use the T5 screwdriver to remove the single screw securing the SSD.
  • Gently pull the SSD backward to remove it from the slot.

Remove Wi-Fi Card

  • Remove the only screw holding the Wi-Fi card using a T5 screwdriver.
  • Gently pull the card backward to remove it from its connector.

Remove CPU Fan

  • Remove the three T5 screws that secure the CPU fan.
  • Carefully lift the fan from its position.

Remove Logic Board and Heatsink

  • Remove the seven T5 screws securing the logic board and heatsink assembly to the chassis.
  • Clear surrounding cables to make room for removal.
  • Gently lift the logic board from the end of the heatsink area.

Remove I/O Power Board

  • Remove the single screw securing the I/O power board using the T5 screwdriver.
  • Carefully lift and remove the board.

Remove Display Assembly

  • Use the T8 screwdriver to remove the six screws securing the LCD to the chassis.
  • Slowly open the MacBook as you normally would until the display fully detaches from the main body.

Remove Speakers

  • Gently pull the speakers from the top edge.
  • Take your time as the speakers are lightly glued in—avoid bending or applying pressure that could damage them.
  • A plastic separating tool can help loosen the adhesive safely.

Disassembling the 13-inch Mid-2013 MacBook Air requires careful steps, steady hands, and the right tools. This guide walks you through each part of the process clearly, from removing the back cover to separating the display and speakers.
