REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 1 HOUR to complete and is of INTERMEDIATE difficulty, requiring careful disassembly, handling of adhesive components, and attention to cable reconnections.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a T5 screwdriver, a Phillips screwdriver, isopropyl alcohol to loosen adhesive, and a plastic spudger for safely prying components without causing damage.

Remove Bottom Case

  • Flip the MacBook Pro over and remove the bottom cover using the appropriate screwdriver.
  • Carefully lift off the cover and set it aside.
  • Observe the battery; note that one cell appears swollen, identifying it as the root issue.

Disconnect Trackpad Flex Cable

  • Use a T5 screwdriver to remove the bracket securing the trackpad flex cable to the logic board.
  • Unplug the flex cable and gently pull it back to avoid damage during battery removal.

Disconnect Battery

  • Use a plastic spudger to carefully unplug the battery connector.
  • Peel back the protective tape cover to access the two hidden T5 screws.
  • Remove the screws that secure the battery management unit daughterboard.

Apply Isopropyl Alcohol

  • Apply isopropyl alcohol around the battery to help break down the adhesive holding it in place.
  • Let it sit for a moment to allow the solution to work effectively.

Optional: Unplug Trackpad Cable

  • As a precautionary measure, unplug the trackpad flex cable from the board.
  • Set it aside; this step is optional but considered best practice during battery removal.

Remove Battery

  • Carefully pry up the battery using a plastic spudger.
  • Double-check for any missed screws—one T5 screw at the top may be easily overlooked.
  • Once free, lift the battery out of the chassis.

Clean Adhesive Residue

  • Remove all remaining adhesive strips from the top case.
  • Ensure the surface is clean and ready for the new battery.

Install New Battery

  • Remove the adhesive coverings from the replacement battery.
  • Line up the battery, starting from the top right corner where it will be screwed down.

Secure Battery

  • Insert the T5 screw on the right side to secure the battery.
  • Note that this model uses captive screws with a Phillips head—only one T5 screw is needed in this case.

Prep Trackpad Flex for Reconnection

  • Remove the cover to allow more flexibility for aligning the trackpad flex cable.
  • Reconnect the trackpad flex cable to the trackpad first, then secure the retention bracket.

Reassemble Trackpad and Battery

  • Place the tape cover over the flex cable and plug the trackpad into the logic board.
  • Re-secure the original protective cover and screw it in place.
  • Plug the battery back in and place the tape cover back over the connector.

Reinstall Bottom Cover

  • Place the bottom cover back onto the MacBook Pro.
  • Screw it down, noting that the two smaller screws go at the top.

Test Power

  • Flip the MacBook over and connect the charger.
  • The unit powers on successfully, confirming that the battery replacement was completed properly.

CONCLUSION:

This MacBook Pro A1502 battery replacement was straightforward thanks to the clear internal layout and minimal component disassembly. Using isopropyl alcohol made removing the old battery safer and easier. With careful handling of the flex cables and correct screw placements, this repair restores the laptop to a safe and functional state. Always test before fully closing up to ensure success.
