We’ll guide you through each detailed step, covering the removal of components like the SSD, fans, I/O board, and Wi-Fi module, followed by installation of the replacement logic board. This blog offers a precise walkthrough for technicians and DIYers alike.

REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 2 TO 3 HOURS to complete and is of ADVANCED difficulty, requiring careful disassembly of internal components, precision handling, and reassembly of delicate connections.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a Pentalobe screwdriver to open the bottom case, a T5 Torx screwdriver for removing internal components, a plastic spudger for safe disconnection of cables, and a replacement logic board for the MacBook Pro A1398. Additional tools include isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber cloth for cleaning the chassis during the process.

Remove the Bottom Case

  • Flip the MacBook over to access the bottom cover.
  • Use a pentalobe screwdriver to remove all screws around the perimeter.
  • Lift and remove the back cover to expose internal components.

Disconnect the Battery

  • Locate the battery connector at the center-top of the logic board.
  • Use a plastic spudger to lift the battery connection up.
  • Ensure the battery is fully disconnected before continuing work.

Remove the SSD

  • Using a T5 screwdriver, remove the screw holding the SSD in place.
  • Slide the SSD out gently and set it aside safely.

Remove the Wi-Fi Module

  • Use a plastic spudger to unplug the Wi-Fi antenna cables.
  • Remove the T5 screw securing the Wi-Fi card.
  • Lift the Wi-Fi module out of its socket.

Disconnect and Remove IO Board Components

  • Unfasten the T5 screws securing the IO board cable and covers.
  • Use the spudger to unplug the IO board cable.
  • Unscrew and disconnect the coax cable below that links to the IO board.

Disconnect the Trackpad and Other Peripheral Cables

  • Peel back the trackpad cable and unplug it from the logic board.
  • Unplug the keyboard, left speaker, CPU fans, right fan, right speaker, keyboard backlight, and LCD display connectors.

Remove CPU Fans

  • Begin with the left fan and then proceed to the right.
  • Unplug the fan connectors before removing them.
  • Set both fans aside after unscrewing them with a T5 driver.

Remove the Logic Board and Heatsink

  • Remove the rubber nub covering a hidden T5 screw.
  • Unscrew all visible T5 screws across the logic board and heatsink.
  • Carefully lift the logic board — do not yank as the MagSafe cable is still connected.

Disconnect the Remaining Cables from the Logic Board

  • Unplug the MagSafe charging cable.
  • Disconnect the logic board to IO board coax cable.
  • Set the damaged logic board aside.

Prepare the New Logic Board

  • Remove two T5 screws from the chassis for easier installation.
  • Clean the top case to ensure no debris is left from the previous logic board.

Begin Logic Board Installation

  • Plug the MagSafe connector and IO board coax cable into the new logic board.
  • Begin aligning the board from the right side, slotting it into position while checking all cables are not trapped underneath.

Secure the Logic Board

  • Install the two smallest T5 screws at the bottom.
  • Use the longest T5 screws to secure the top corners of the board.

Reconnect All Cables

  • Reconnect the keyboard backlight, speaker, keyboard, and trackpad cables.
  • Plug in the front microphone array.
  • Make sure all connectors are properly seated and retention bars are closed.

Reinstall the IO Board

  • Secure the IO board with two T5 screws.
  • Plug in the IO board flex cable on both ends and secure with retention bars.

Install Heatsink Screws

  • Use T5 screws to secure both sides of the heatsink to the chassis.

Reinstall CPU Fans

  • Start with the right or left fan, whichever is easier.
  • Plug in the fan cables before screwing the fans down to ensure easy access.

Reconnect Webcam and Wi-Fi Antennas

  • Plug in the webcam cable.
  • Insert the Wi-Fi card and secure with a T5 screw.
  • Reconnect the three Wi-Fi antenna cables, moving left to right.

Secure MagSafe Port and LCD

  • Reinstall the two T5 screws holding the MagSafe port.
  • Plug in the LCD connector and lock the retention bar.

Final Internal Assembly

  • Reinstall the retention bracket over the trackpad cable.
  • Insert and secure the SSD using the original T5 screw.
  • Reconnect the battery connector.

Reassemble Bottom Case

  • Replace the bottom cover and secure with pentalobe screws.
  • Be mindful of screw size—use the two smaller screws for the top two holes.

Power On and Test

  • Plug in the MagSafe charger and verify the orange charging light.
  • Power on the MacBook and ensure it boots properly into macOS.
  • Confirm all components (keyboard, trackpad, fans) are working.
