We’ll show you step-by-step how to safely remove the bottom case, disconnect and remove the battery, take out the old trackpad, and install a new one. By following this detailed tutorial, you’ll restore full trackpad functionality. Let’s get started with this repair.

REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 1 to 1.5 HOURS to complete and is of INTERMEDIATE difficulty, requiring careful handling of delicate components and comfort using precision tools.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a pentalobe screwdriver for opening the bottom case, a T5 and T3 Torx screwdriver for internal screws, isopropyl alcohol to loosen adhesive, a flat plastic pry tool to safely lift the battery, and fresh adhesive strips to secure the battery.

Remove the Bottom Case

  • Use a pentalobe screwdriver to remove all screws from the MacBook’s bottom panel.
  • Carefully lift and remove the bottom case to access internal components.
  • Set the screws aside safely for reassembly.

Disconnect the Battery

  • Locate the battery connector on the logic board.
  • Gently disconnect the battery to prevent power from flowing during the repair.
  • This step is essential to ensure a safe working environment.

Remove the Trackpad Flex Cable

  • Use a T5 screwdriver to remove the two screws securing the trackpad flex cable.
  • Disconnect the cable from both the logic board and the daughterboard.
  • Set the flex cable aside safely.

Remove the Battery

  • Apply isopropyl alcohol around the battery cells to weaken the adhesive.
  • Use a flat pry tool (not curved or sharp) to gently lift the battery from the case.
  • Once fully detached, set the battery aside for later reinstallation.

Remove the Trackpad Screws

  • Use a T5 screwdriver to remove all screws along the outer edge of the trackpad.
  • Gently lift the glued-down daughterboard starting from the center to reveal additional screws.
  • Remove the two T3 screws underneath to fully detach the trackpad assembly.

Remove the Old Trackpad

  • Carefully pull out the old trackpad and attached daughterboard.
  • Set the removed trackpad aside and prepare for installation of the new one.

Clean the Trackpad Area

  • Use a soft cloth or tool to clean the area where the new trackpad will be installed.
  • Ensure there is no debris or leftover adhesive to ensure a flat and secure fit.

Install the New Trackpad

  • Place the new trackpad into position.
  • Begin by installing the two larger T3 screws in the center area to secure it.
  • Then install the smaller T3 screws followed by the T5 screws along the perimeter.

Add the Protective Cover

  • If available, place the protective cover over the trackpad area.
  • Remove any taped-on covers and press the protector into place for added durability.

Remove Old Battery Adhesive

  • Carefully peel off all leftover adhesive strips from the battery area.
  • Ensure the surface is clean for the new adhesive to stick properly.

Lay New Adhesive Strips

  • Apply fresh adhesive strips where the battery will be seated.
  • Press each strip down firmly to make sure it adheres well.
  • Remove the protective layers from the adhesive.

Reinstall the Battery

  • Plug the battery connector into the logic board before seating it.
  • Gently place the battery onto the adhesive and press down evenly.
  • Secure the battery using the two T5 screws that were previously removed.

Reconnect Trackpad Flex Cable

  • Reinsert the trackpad flex cable into its connector and close the retention bar.
  • Secure the cable with two T5 screws.
  • Reinstall any covers that go over the trackpad assembly.

Reattach the Bottom Case

  • Align and place the bottom case back onto the MacBook.
  • Use the pentalobe screwdriver to reinstall all screws removed at the beginning.
  • Ensure everything is flush and properly sealed.

Test the Trackpad

  • Open the MacBook and power it on.
  • Confirm that the trackpad is fully functional and responsive.
  • If everything is working properly, the repair is complete!
