REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 2 TO 3 HOURS to complete and is of ADVANCED difficulty, requiring expert-level handling of fragile internal components and precise reassembly of multiple connections.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a Pentalobe screwdriver, a T5 Torx screwdriver, an ESD-safe brush and fan for cleaning, and a non-conductive cleaning solution. You may also use a spudger or plastic tool to safely lift cables and connectors.

Remove the Bottom Case

  • Flip the MacBook over and remove all the Pentalobe screws securing the bottom case.
  • Note that the center two screws are shorter than the others—set them aside separately.
  • Lift off the bottom case to expose the internals.

Disconnect the Battery

  • Locate the center battery connector and gently unplug it to ensure the device is safe to work on.
  • Always disconnect the battery before working on internal components.

Remove the SSD

  • Use a T5 screwdriver to remove the SSD securing screw.
  • Gently pull the SSD out and set it aside safely to preserve the user’s data.

Disconnect and Remove I/O Board Cable

  • Unscrew the T5 screws holding the I/O board cable in place.
  • Unplug the I/O board flex cable and set it aside.

Remove Wi-Fi Card

  • Disconnect the Wi-Fi antennas.
  • Unscrew and remove the Wi-Fi card, which is held lightly by a thermal pad—gently peel it away.

Detach Battery Cover

  • Peel back the battery cover and remove the screw hidden underneath.
  • This will expose the trackpad and keyboard cable connections.

Unplug the Trackpad Cable

  • Remove the T5 screw holding the trackpad cable retention bar.
  • Unplug the trackpad cable and bend it gently out of the way.

Remove Cooling Fans

  • Unscrew the CPU fans using the T5 screwdriver.
  • Unplug both fan connectors from the logic board.

Disconnect Display & Peripheral Cables

  • Unplug the LCD, webcam, and microphone connectors.
  • Unplug both speakers, backlight cable, keyboard cables, and LCD connector with its retention bar.
  • Detach the remaining cables, including the I/O board cable that runs under the logic board.

Unscrew the Logic Board

  • Start from the top left using a T5 screwdriver and remove all logic board screws.
  • Be careful not to forget the MagSafe screws near the charging port.

Remove the Logic Board

  • Lift the logic board carefully from the case.
  • Remove the MagSafe connector and the I/O board coax cable.
  • Set the old logic board aside after all connectors are safely removed.

Clean the Inside of the MacBook

  • Use a non-conductive cleaner and an ESD-safe brush and fan to remove dust from the internal case.
  • Ensure all contact areas are clean before installing the new board.

Prepare and Install the New Logic Board

  • Unbox the new logic board and begin by connecting the I/O coax cable.
  • Connect the MagSafe connector, making sure it’s properly seated in its slot.
  • Lay the logic board into position, ensuring no cables are trapped underneath.

Secure the Logic Board and Components

  • Begin fastening screws from the right-hand side starting with the MagSafe area.
  • Secure the CPU fans, then the logic board screws—long, tapered, and short—into their specific slots.

Reconnect All Cables

  • Plug in the LCD connector and close the retention bar.
  • Reconnect speakers, keyboard, trackpad, and microphone.
  • Reconnect the Wi-Fi card and antennas before proceeding.

Install the SSD and Final Cables

  • Reinsert the SSD and fasten it with its screw.
  • Place the rubber cover back over the SSD screw.
  • Secure the I/O board flex cable at both ends.

Reconnect the Battery and Reassemble

  • Plug in the battery connector.
  • Place the bottom case back on the device and fasten it down using all the Pentalobe screws, noting the shorter ones in the center.

Power On and Test

  • Flip the MacBook over and connect a charger.
  • The device should automatically power on and initialize—confirm all components are functioning properly.

CONCLUSION:

This logic board replacement process can breathe new life into a 2015 MacBook Pro 15-inch. With an upgraded processor and clean internals, this MacBook is now back in action. Every component was carefully removed, cleaned, and reinstalled to ensure peak performance. If you follow each step closely, you’ll complete the swap successfully. Be sure to test the system fully before closing up your workstation.
