REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 2 to 3 hours to complete and is of ADVANCED difficulty, requiring careful handling of internal components and knowledge of MacBook disassembly.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a suction cup, pentalobe screwdriver, T5, T3, and T8 screwdriver bits, a D1 and PL1 driver, and a plastic spudger or your thumb for hinge adjustments. Fingernails or a precision tip can help with Wi-Fi antenna alignment.

Remove the Bottom Case

  • Use a pentalobe screwdriver to remove all bottom screws, noting different lengths.
  • Place a suction cup at the bottom edge and lift gently.
  • Push outward with your thumb and pull backward to release the case.

Disconnect the Battery

  • Remove the taped cover to access the flex cable.
  • Unplug the battery daughter board flex cable from the main board.
  • Use a T5 screwdriver to unscrew and lift the battery contact point to prevent power.

Unscrew Wi-Fi and LCD Brackets

  • With the T5 bit, remove screws holding the Wi-Fi cables and LCD assembly.
  • Set aside each screw carefully for reinstallation.
  • Ensure you don’t misplace the Wi-Fi securing bracket.

Remove Hinge Covers and LCD Screws

  • Switch to a T3 bit and remove two screws on each LCD hinge cover.
  • Remove hinge covers and the four screws on either side of the LCD.
  • Also unscrew the LCD connection bracket screws using the T3 bit.

Remove LCD Hinges

  • Use a T8 bit to remove three screws from both LCD hinges.
  • Keep pressure even when unscrewing to avoid tension on the hinges.

Detach Wi-Fi Vent Module

  • Switch to the D1 driver and remove screws securing the vent module.
  • Disconnect the LCD connector and unplug the Wi-Fi cables.
  • Pop out the Wi-Fi vent module and set it aside.

Separate the LCD Assembly

  • Open the MacBook to create a gap between the top case and LCD.
  • Pull upward gently to separate the two halves completely.
  • Set the broken LCD aside and prepare the new one.

Install the New LCD

  • Unbox the replacement LCD and push hinges open with your thumb.
  • Align the top case and new LCD carefully until you hear it click.
  • Ensure connectors and black pieces are properly aligned before continuing.

Reinstall Wi-Fi Vent and Screws

  • Feed the Wi-Fi antennas through the hole in the vent module.
  • Secure the module in place and reinstall the six T5 screws (start from the middle).
  • Tighten LCD hinge screws snugly to ensure screen doesn’t wobble.

Reconnect Cables and Modules

  • Use fingernails to align and press Wi-Fi antennas into place.
  • Connect the LCD connector and reinstall the PL1 screws to secure the vent module.
  • Use T5 screws to fasten the Wi-Fi and LCD connections.

Final Internal Assembly

  • Use a T3 bit to install four more screws that secure the LCD frame.
  • Reinstall the LCD retention bars and hinge covers using the same T3 bit.
  • Secure the battery contact point and reconnect the flex cable with tape.

Reattach Bottom Case

  • Line up the top case “fingers” and press each side until you hear it click.
  • Reinstall the pentalobe screws in their original positions:
  • Longest screws go on top left and right.
  • Slightly shorter ones in the corners.
  • The shortest ones are in the center.
  • Press around the bottom case to ensure full closure.

CONCLUSION:

That wraps up the full LCD replacement for the MacBook Pro 13-inch model A708. Every screw and component needs to go back into its original position to ensure the MacBook closes properly and works as expected. The most challenging steps involve hinge and antenna alignment, but with care, it’s manageable. Make sure your new screen sits flush with the top case before closing. This guide should give you the confidence to tackle the repair yourself.
