How To Replace The Battery on a MacBook Air A1932 2018-19!

OVERVIEW:

In this detailed repair guide, we walk through the battery replacement process for a 2018–2019 MacBook Air (model A1932), focusing on a rose gold unit with a swollen battery cell. The swelling caused the top case to begin separating, signaling a need for urgent replacement. We’ll take you step-by-step through removing the bottom case, disconnecting internal components like the speakers and trackpad, and safely installing a new battery. All procedures reflect the same methods used by professionals in a mail-in repair shop. Let’s begin restoring your MacBook’s battery life.

REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 1.5 TO 2 HOURS to complete and is of INTERMEDIATE difficulty, requiring careful handling of internal components and adhesive strips.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a Pentalobe screwdriver to remove the outer case, a T3 and T5 screwdriver for internal components, tweezers for handling pull tabs, isopropyl alcohol (98% or higher) to soften adhesive, and a plastic spudger to disconnect cables and lift delicate parts.

Remove the Bottom Case

  • Flip the MacBook over and remove all 8 visible Pentalobe screws (10 originally, 2 are missing on this unit).
  • Note that the top screws are longer than the sides and bottom.
  • Lift the bottom case to reveal the internal components.

Disconnect the Battery

  • Locate the battery connector and use a plastic spudger to disconnect it from the logic board.
  • This step is crucial to safely work on the device and avoid electrical damage.
  • Set the battery cable aside gently.

Remove Trackpad Retention Plate

  • Use a T3 screwdriver to remove two screws on the retention plate holding the trackpad Flex cable.
  • Unplug the Flex cable carefully using a spudger.
  • On this model, the Flex cable is adhered and goes under the logic board, so handle with care.

Detach Trackpad Flex Cable

  • Open the MacBook slightly so the trackpad dangles.
  • Use the plastic spudger to unlatch and unplug the cable from the trackpad.
  • Peel it off gently from the adhesive; do not force if it resists.

Unplug and Prepare Speakers

  • Disconnect both left and right speaker cables from the logic board.
  • Note that the right speaker is glued, while the left is not.
  • Handle connectors gently to avoid tearing or ripping cables.

Remove Speaker Adhesive Pull Tabs

  • Use tweezers to grab the speaker pull tabs and roll to remove the glue strip.
  • If pull tabs snap, use isopropyl alcohol to loosen adhesive under the speaker.
  • Lift speaker edges carefully with a plastic spudger until fully removed.

Remove Battery Retention Screws

  • Use a T3 screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the battery bracket.
  • These screws are located on either side of the battery connector.
  • Set the bracket aside safely.

Remove Battery Adhesive Pull Tabs

  • Carefully twist and roll each of the six adhesive pull tabs to loosen them.
  • Remove them completely to free the battery from the top case.
  • If any tab snaps, use alcohol and a spudger to release adhesive.

Lift and Remove Old Battery

  • Once all adhesive is removed, lift the battery gently out of the chassis.
  • Set the old battery aside and recycle properly.
  • Clean the surface beneath the battery before installing a new one.

Prepare and Install New Battery

  • Align the new battery with screw posts and the center of the chassis.
  • Press into place carefully, ensuring adhesive sticks.
  • Secure it with the original T3 screws.

Reinstall Speakers

  • Apply fresh adhesive to both speakers and remove protective backing.
  • Press each speaker into position, starting with the left then the right.
  • Reconnect both speaker cables securely to the logic board.

Reconnect Trackpad Flex Cable

  • Open the MacBook slightly and align the washers in correct orientation.
  • Feed the Flex cable through the cutout and connect it to the trackpad.
  • Close the retention latch once connected.

Secure the Trackpad

  • Use T5 screws to secure the trackpad—two at each corner and one in the center.
  • Ensure it is aligned and does not shift before tightening.
  • Double-check washer placement for proper tactile feedback.

Reconnect Trackpad to Logic Board

  • Plug the other end of the trackpad Flex cable into the logic board.
  • Install the retention bracket using two T3 screws.
  • Confirm all connections are secure before proceeding.

Reconnect the Battery

  • Align and slide the battery connector back into the logic board port.
  • Press firmly but gently to ensure full connection.
  • You are now ready to test the repair.

Power On and Test

  • Plug in a charger and verify that the MacBook powers on.
  • Check that it is charging, holding a charge, and functioning correctly.
  • Test both charging ports to confirm they are working.

Reinstall Bottom Case

  • Replace the bottom case, ensuring all alignment clips click into place.
  • Insert and tighten all 10 Pentalobe screws (longer screws go at the top).
  • If screws are missing, replace them for full enclosure support.
