MacBook Pro 13″ A1989 Screen Replacement Guide (2018–2019 Model)

OVERVIEW:

In this repair guide, we walk through the screen replacement process for the MacBook Pro Retina A1989. This model was mailed in to the shop for a display replacement. The repair process involves careful removal of the antenna bar, hinge screws, and antenna cables, followed by installation of a replacement OEM display. As always, disconnecting the battery before beginning is critical for safety. Follow along step by step to safely perform this screen repair at home.

REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 1.5 TO 2 HOURS to complete and is of INTERMEDIATE difficulty, requiring careful handling of delicate flex cables, connectors, and hinge assembly during the screen replacement process.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a Pentalobe screwdriver to remove the bottom case, a Phillips screwdriver for interior screws, a plastic spudger for disconnecting cables safely, and tweezers for guiding delicate antenna wires through the frame.

Remove the Bottom Case

  • Flip the MacBook over and unscrew all bottom screws using a Pentalobe screwdriver.
  • Gently lift and remove the bottom case; place it to the side.
  • Ensure the internal components are visible before proceeding.

Disconnect the Battery

  • Locate the battery connector under a flex cable covering.
  • Unscrew the cover and lift the cable to expose the battery connector.
  • Open the connector and ensure it stays disconnected throughout the repair.

Remove the Display Cover Brackets

  • With the battery safely disconnected, move to the display side.
  • Lift off the display hinge covers to expose the hinge screws.
  • Unscrew the bar that spans the hinges and set it aside.

Disconnect Antenna Connectors

  • Unscrew the bracket holding the antenna connectors in place.
  • Carefully disconnect the antenna cables using a plastic spudger or tweezers.
  • Set the bracket aside in a safe place.

Unscrew the Display Hinges

  • Remove three screws from each hinge holding the display in place.
  • With screws removed, gently lift the screen; the hinges will loosen naturally.
  • Be cautious not to tug on antenna cables during removal.

Remove the Antenna Cables

  • Gently pull the antenna cables through the small channel in the MacBook frame.
  • Take your time feeding the cables to avoid tearing or pinching.
  • Set the antenna bar and damaged display aside.

Install the Replacement Screen

  • Unbox and prepare the replacement OEM display.
  • Align the new screen with the hinge mounts on the MacBook.
  • Angle it carefully so that all cables stay properly routed through the hinge slots.

Reconnect the Antenna Bar

  • Feed the antenna cables through the same channel in the MacBook frame.
  • Guide all three cables evenly—longest cable goes furthest, shortest stays closest.
  • Align and reconnect all antenna connectors.

Secure Antenna Bracket and Hinges

  • Screw the antenna bracket back into place.
  • Ensure the connectors are flush and properly seated.
  • Tighten down all hinge screws evenly on both sides of the screen.

Reattach Display Cover Brackets

  • Place the correct hinge cover on each side.
  • Align the screw holes and fasten the covers securely.
  • Double-check all screws are tightened.

Reconnect the Battery

  • Lower the battery flex cable back into position.
  • Push the connector down to reattach the battery.
  • Ensure the connection is firm before attempting to power on.

Test the New Display

  • Plug the MacBook into a charger to initiate boot if it doesn’t turn on right away.
  • Confirm the screen displays properly with no artifacts or glitches.
  • Power off the unit again before sealing.

Reattach Bottom Case

  • Align the bottom case with the MacBook.
  • Press down evenly and screw all Pentalobe screws back into place.
  • Your screen replacement is now complete.

CONCLUSION:

Replacing the screen on a MacBook Pro A1989 is a methodical process that requires patience and precision. With the right tools and careful handling, you can complete this repair successfully. Always remember to disconnect the battery before beginning and test your replacement part before sealing the device. Following each step precisely ensures a safe and effective repair. If at any point you’re unsure, seek professional help.
