REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

Repair Time & Skill Level:
This repair is estimated to take about 2–3 HOURS to complete and is of ADVANCED difficulty, requiring careful handling of sensitive internal components and prior experience with MacBook repairs.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a pentalobe screwdriver, T3, T5, and T8 screwdrivers, a suction cup, a plastic spudger for disconnecting components safely, and a Phillips screwdriver. Having a parts organizer or magnetic mat is also recommended to avoid losing any small screws.

Remove the Bottom Case

  • Use a pentalobe screwdriver to remove the screws securing the bottom cover.
  • Place a suction cup on the case, lift carefully, and pull the cover toward yourself to release the internal clips.
  • Be cautious not to cut your hands on the sharp aluminum edges.

Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a plastic spudger to lift and disconnect the battery daughter board cable.
  • Remove the T5 screw holding down the battery contact points.
  • Gently prop the contact area up to fully isolate power.

Remove Hinge Covers

  • Use a T3 screwdriver to remove the screws on both hinge covers.
  • This exposes the six T8 screws at the hinge points.
  • Keep all screws organized, as sizes vary.

Unscrew LCD Hinges

  • Use a T8 screwdriver to loosen the six hinge screws.
  • These may be very tight due to thread locker—apply steady force.
  • Once removed, the LCD begins to loosen from the housing.

Remove Wi-Fi & Display Screws

  • Use a PL1 screwdriver to remove tiny screws near the hinge.
  • Be extremely careful as these strip easily and are hard to replace.
  • Use a T5 screwdriver to remove screws securing the Wi-Fi antenna and display mount.

Disconnect Display Bungees and Brackets

  • Use a T3 screwdriver to remove the deep screws securing the display bungees.
  • Remove additional T3 screws holding down the LCD connector bracket.
  • Carefully remove the bracket and expose the display connector.

Disconnect Display & Wi-Fi Cables

  • Disconnect the LCD connector by lifting straight up.
  • Unplug the Wi-Fi antennas from their connectors.
  • Gently remove the Wi-Fi vent module (also known as the bracket).

Detach the LCD Panel

  • Open the MacBook slightly and push the LCD hinges outward.
  • Pull the LCD up and away from the body to separate it.
  • Set the old LCD aside and prepare the new one for installation.

Reinstall the LCD Assembly

  • Place the new LCD in position and align the hinges.
  • Hold the hinges while closing the top case gently.
  • Reinsert the Wi-Fi vent module before securing hinges fully.

Secure the LCD Hinges

  • Use a T8 screwdriver to reinstall the hinge screws, starting from the center and moving outward in a cross pattern.
  • Ensure they are tightened well to prevent screen wobble.

Reattach Hinge Covers

  • Align and install the hinge covers using a T3 screwdriver.
  • Start both screws before tightening either to allow for alignment.

Install PL1 Screws

  • Use the PL1 screwdriver to reinstall the tiny screws around the hinge.
  • Begin at the center and work outward to ensure proper alignment.

Reinstall T5 Screws

  • Use the T5 screwdriver to secure the LCD and Wi-Fi mount points.
  • Ensure each screw is back in its original place.

Secure LCD Connector and Brackets

  • Plug in the LCD connector until it clicks into place.
  • Reinstall the small bracket using a T3 screwdriver, starting with one screw and then the other.

Connect Wi-Fi Antennas and Module

  • Plug in the Wi-Fi antennas, starting with the top one.
  • Use a T5 screwdriver to reinstall the unique bracket that secures them.

Reconnect the Battery

  • Carefully plug in the battery daughter board cable.
  • Use the T5 screwdriver to secure the bracket that holds the battery connection.
  • Ensure it is fully seated or the device may not power or charge properly.

Reinstall Bottom Case

  • Align the bottom case and snap it into place starting from one side.
  • Reinsert the long screws into the back with a pentalobe screwdriver.
  • Insert shorter screws into the front in the correct positions.

You’ve now successfully replaced the LCD on a 13-inch 2020 MacBook. From battery isolation to intricate reassembly, this detailed guide walked you through each step clearly and carefully.
