REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 2.5 TO 3 HOURS to complete and is of ADVANCED difficulty, requiring careful handling of delicate cables, multiple screw types, and detailed familiarity with internal MacBook components.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a Pentalobe screwdriver for opening the back panel, a Torx 3, 4, 5, and 6 screwdriver for internal screws, a plastic pry tool for safe cable and cover removal, and patience for dealing with delicate adhesive and fragile connectors.

Remove the Back Cover

  • Use a pentalobe screwdriver to remove 4 long screws on the top and 4 short screws on the bottom.
  • Insert a pry tool along the right and left sides to disengage the internal tabs.
  • Brace the MacBook with your thumb and gently pull off the back panel.

Disconnect the Battery

  • Remove two Torx 3 screws holding the casing over the battery connector.
  • Use the pry tool to carefully lift and detach both pull-tab connectors from the battery.
  • Remove the final battery screw and hold the power button for 10 seconds to fully discharge the device.

Familiarize Yourself with the Internal Layout

  • Take a picture or make mental notes of cable and connector locations.
  • Identify I/O ports, fans, display connectors, keyboard connectors, and speaker cables.
  • Organize screws and components in the order you remove them to simplify reassembly.

Disconnect All Ribbon Cables

  • Start with the speaker cables; lift the pull tabs and gently disconnect.
  • Remove keyboard and fan connectors from the center area.
  • Continue unplugging cables across the board, using a pry tool or fingernail to lift them gently.

Remove Display Cable Housings and Wi-Fi Antennas

  • Use a Torx 3 screwdriver to remove protective casings from display and Wi-Fi cables.
  • Gently disconnect each antenna and cable with a pry tool, lifting slowly to avoid tearing.

Disconnect the Power Button/Fingerprint Reader Cable

  • Carefully remove the adhesive-secured cable for the power button and fingerprint reader.
  • Slowly peel and pull the cable back, keeping it intact for reuse or replacement.

Unscrew the Motherboard

  • Start by removing four hidden screws using a pry tool to reveal them.
  • Use a Torx 5 for the majority of screws and Torx 6 for three key locations (top right, top left, middle left).
  • Keep track of different screw lengths and types, especially those at the bottom.

Remove the Logic Board

  • Lift from the right side and carefully navigate around connectors as you remove it.
  • Gently slide it out without bending the board, checking for any missed screws or resistance.
  • Pull away rubber fan grommets and clear ports from SD and HDMI side as you remove it.

Remove and Transfer the Fingerprint Reader and Power Button

  • Unscrew six Torx 3 screws securing the component.
  • Slowly lift adhesive from the lip using a rotating motion with your pry tool.
  • Route the cable through the device from the inside and remove the old part.

Install the New Power Button

  • Insert the new cable from the front, lining up the part carefully.
  • Tighten the screws partially to adjust alignment.
  • Use opposite corners to fine-tune its position, then re-tighten all screws.

Insert the New Logic Board

  • Start by aligning the side with SD and HDMI ports.
  • Manually pull through cables like the fan and display connectors as you lower the board in.
  • Reposition the rubber heat sink guards as needed.

Reconnect All Internal Cables

  • Begin plugging in speaker, fan, power button, and display cables.
  • Handle antenna connectors with care—align and press down gently until they click.
  • Reattach Thunderbolt, charging ports, and both keyboard flex cables.

Reinstall Logic Board Screws

  • Start with small Torx 3 screws in the front.
  • Install Torx 5 screws around the perimeter, leaving the three larger screws for last.
  • Use Torx 6 to fasten the final three screws at designated corners.

Replace Protective Covers

  • Reverse your removal order to reinstall cable shields and protective casings.
  • Match screws with their respective covers, especially for Wi-Fi and display cables.
  • Reattach all screw covers for a clean finish.

Reconnect the Battery and Trackpad Cable

  • Align and secure the battery with its screw, then reinsert and latch both flex connectors.
  • Reconnect the trackpad cable and install its protective cover.

Reattach the Back Plate

  • Press the cover into the hinges and snap it down along the left and right sides.
  • Reinstall the 4 long screws on top and 4 short ones at the bottom using the pentalobe screwdriver.

Test the Repair

  • Plug in the MacBook and power it on.
  • Confirm that the keyboard and trackpad are working correctly.
  • If everything checks out, your logic board replacement is complete!
