MacBook Pro 13″ M2 A2338 LCD Replacement Guide 2022 Model – Choosing the Right Screen

OVERVIEW:

In this repair guide, we’ll walk you through a complete LCD replacement for a 13-inch MacBook Pro A2338 (M2 model). This unit was mailed in for service due to a damaged display. While similar to the M1 version, there are slight variations in component placement. The process involves a full teardown of the device, including disassembly of the hinge covers, Wi-Fi antenna, and vent modules, followed by installation of the new display and careful reassembly. Follow each step below for a smooth and safe repair.

REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 1.5 to 2 HOURS to complete and is of ADVANCED difficulty, requiring experience handling internal components and care when disconnecting delicate connectors.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a heating mat set between 70 to 90 degrees Celsius, a Pentalobe screwdriver for the bottom case, a T5 screwdriver for most internal components, a T8 screwdriver for hinge screws, a T3 screwdriver for LCD-related hardware, a PH000 (PL1) screwdriver for small edge screws, and a suction cup to lift the bottom case.

Flip the MacBook Over and Remove the Bottom Case

  • Use a Pentalobe screwdriver to remove all screws securing the bottom case.
  • Apply a suction cup to lift and release the magnets holding the panel.
  • Slide the bottom case forward to detach it from the top case tabs.

Disconnect the Battery Safely

  • Disconnect the battery daughterboard cable from the logic board.
  • Use a T5 screwdriver to remove the pancake screw holding the battery connector.
  • Bend the connector gently away to prevent accidental power contact.

Remove LCD Bungee and Wi-Fi Vent Module

  • With the T5 still in hand, remove one small pancake screw near the antenna cover.
  • Unscrew the four black screws holding the LCD bungee and Wi-Fi vent assembly.
  • Switch to a PL1 screwdriver and remove screws at the top that secure the Wi-Fi vent module to the top case.

Remove Hinge Covers and LCD Assembly Screws

  • Use a T3 screwdriver to remove the two screws on each hinge cover.
  • Be cautious of incorrectly installed screws that might get stuck inside the covers.
  • Continue with the T3 to remove four more black screws that secure the LCD bungee.

Unplug Display and Antenna Connectors

  • Disconnect the Wi-Fi antennas and display cable from the logic board.
  • Carefully remove the entire Wi-Fi vent module once all screws are out.

Detach the LCD from the Hinges

  • Use a T8 screwdriver to remove all six screws holding the display hinges.
  • Slowly open the unit to fully separate the old LCD from the top case.

Install New LCD Panel

  • Take the new display out of its packaging.
  • Align and slot the hinges into position, ensuring no cables are trapped.
  • Close the unit gently to hold the hinges in place.

Reattach Hinges with T8 Screws

  • Secure the new display using the six T8 screws into the hinge slots.
  • Ensure all hinge screws are firm but not overtightened.

Reinstall Wi-Fi Vent Module and LCD Bungee

  • Feed all antenna and display cables through the correct openings.
  • Use T5 screws to secure the Wi-Fi vent module and LCD bungee assembly.

Reconnect Display and Antenna Cables

  • Plug in the LCD display connector and Wi-Fi antenna cables.
  • Use the T5 again to install the small pancake screw holding antenna cables.

Secure Edge Screws with PL1

  • Take your PL1 screwdriver and reattach the very small screws along the module edges.
  • These screws ensure proper fit and structural support of the vent assembly.

Final LCD Assembly Screws

  • Go back to your T3 screwdriver to secure the four screws in the center display area.
  • These secure the LCD bungee assembly to the device.
  • Reinstall hinge covers; one had a stuck screw, but it was successfully reinstalled.

Reconnect Battery and Replace Bottom Case

  • Use a T5 to reinstall the pancake screw on the battery connector.
  • Plug in the battery daughterboard cable.
  • Replace the internal cover and align the bottom case with the top case.

Close the MacBook and Secure Screws

  • Push the bottom panel forward to engage the locking clips.
  • Reinstall all Pentalobe screws, placing the longest on top and the shortest in the middle.
  • Ensure a snug and even fit on all edges.

Power On and Test the Device

  • Flip the MacBook over and plug in a charger.
  • Confirm that the unit powers on and recognizes charging.
  • In this case, the machine booted up immediately after connection.
