REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:
This repair is estimated to take about 45 to 60 minutes to complete and is of INTERMEDIATE difficulty, requiring careful handling of internal components and confidence working around a laptop’s motherboard.

STEPS:
Tools You Need
For this repair, you will need a Phillips head screwdriver, a plastic prying tool or card to separate the case, and a replacement charging port. It’s also helpful to have tweezers for handling small connectors and a charger to test the fix afterward.
Remove All Bottom Screws
- Flip the laptop over and locate all Phillips screws on the bottom panel.
- Remove every visible screw; note that one screw may already be missing.
- The two upper corner screws are captive—they will loosen but won’t come out of the panel.

Pry Off the Bottom Case
- Use a plastic pry tool or a plastic card to work around the edge of the laptop.
- Gently separate the bottom case from the top chassis until it pops off.
- Remove the entire bottom panel and set it aside safely.

Disconnect the Battery
- Locate the battery connector near the center of the motherboard.
- Peel back any black tape covering the connector.
- Pull the connector straight back to safely disconnect the battery.

Locate the Charging Port Assembly
- The charging port is located underneath the left-side LCD hinge.
- Examine the hinge and note the three screws securing it.
- Ensure the battery is disconnected before continuing.

Remove Hinge Screws Over Charging Port
- Using the same Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the three screws holding the LCD hinge in place.
- Set the screws aside carefully—they will be reused.
- This step exposes the charging port beneath the hinge.

Open the Laptop to Lift the Hinge
- Carefully open the laptop lid to raise the hinge slightly.
- This provides clearance to access the charging port beneath it.
- No need to fully open the display—just enough to free the hinge.
Remove the Charging Port Screw
- Identify the small screw holding the charging port module in place.
- Remove this final screw and set it aside with the others.
- Be gentle to avoid damaging surrounding components.

Disconnect and Remove the Charging Port
- Gently unplug the charging port cable from the motherboard.
- Lift the charging port out of the chassis.
- Set the damaged port aside—you’re now ready to install the new one.
Install the New Charging Port
- Align the new charging port in the same orientation as the old one.
- Slide its cable into the motherboard connector and secure it gently.
- Reinsert the retention screw to hold the new port in place.
Close the LCD Hinge
- Slowly close the laptop lid so the LCD hinge lowers into its original position.
- Align the two small plastic alignment nubs with the hinge for proper placement.
- Ensure the hinge sits flush against the body before proceeding.

Reattach the Three Hinge Screws
- Insert the three screws that were removed earlier.
- Secure the hinge tightly to lock the new charging port in place.
- Double-check alignment to avoid stress on the charging cable.

Reconnect the Battery
- Return to the battery connector and align it with its socket.
- Push the connector in until it’s fully seated.
- Lay the black tape back over the connector if applicable.

Reinstall the Bottom Case
- Place the bottom panel back on the laptop.
- Gently press around the edges until it clicks back into place.
- Ensure all clips are secure before tightening screws.
Secure All Screws
- Start with the two captive screws at the top corners.
- Then reinstall all remaining Phillips head screws.
- Use a criss-cross pattern for even pressure if needed.

Test the Repair with a Charger
- Plug in a Dell-compatible charger into the new port.
- Confirm that the charging LED lights up immediately.
- This verifies that power is reaching the device.

Power On the Laptop
- Open the laptop lid and press the power button.
- Check for keyboard backlighting and screen activity.
- Confirm the laptop boots and remains charging—repair is successful!

CONCLUSION:
Replacing the charging port on a Dell Inspiron laptop is a manageable repair if you follow the steps closely. This teardown walked you through disassembly, port replacement, and full reassembly in detail. The key to success is staying organized with your screws and being gentle with internal components. Once complete, you’ll have a fully functional charging port and a working device again.
