Dell Inspiron P119F OLED – Full Teardown & Repair Disassembly Guide

OVERVIEW:

In this teardown guide, we disassemble a Dell Inspiron 16.1 OLED Edition to harvest the LCD for use in another client repair. This tutorial is ideal for users who want to perform a screen replacement or simply understand the internal layout of their laptop. The process involves removing internal components such as the battery, RAM, speakers, logic board, and more. If you’re unsure about doing the repair yourself, remember you can always use our mail-in service. Follow the steps below closely to avoid damaging delicate internal parts.

REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 2–3 HOURS to complete and is of INTERMEDIATE difficulty, requiring careful disassembly and handling of fragile internal components.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a Phillips screwdriver (PH1), a plastic spudger for safely disconnecting cables, and possibly tweezers to handle smaller connectors. Make sure to have an anti-static mat and use appropriate care when working around the motherboard and OLED display connections.

Remove Bottom Case

  • Use a Phillips #1 screwdriver to remove all visible screws on the bottom case.
  • Note: The three screws closest to the edge (near the hands) are captive and will not fully come out.
  • After all screws are loose, pry off the bottom panel carefully to expose internal components.

Disconnect and Remove the Battery

  • Begin by disconnecting the battery cable for safety.
  • Use the same screwdriver to remove six screws holding down the battery.
  • A cable (the daughterboard cable) may be removed accidentally first — no damage if done gently.

Remove RAM Modules

  • Push outward on both metal clips securing the RAM.
  • The RAM will pop up at an angle — pull it out gently.
  • Repeat the same process for the second RAM stick.

Remove the Wi-Fi Card

  • Unscrew the bracket securing the Wi-Fi card and antenna cables.
  • Use a spudger to unplug both antenna wires from the card.
  • Gently pull the Wi-Fi card from the M.2 slot.

Unplug OLED-Specific Ribbon Cable

  • If your unit is an OLED model, locate and disconnect the ribbon cable from the dedicated OLED board.
  • This cable is not present in non-OLED models.

Remove Front and Rear Speakers

  • Remove both front-facing speakers first by unplugging and lifting them out.
  • Trace the rear speaker wires carefully, then unplug and remove both rear speakers.

Unplug Cables for Trackpad, Keyboard, and Backlight

  • These cables sit above the speaker cables and must be unplugged to free the speaker wiring.
  • Gently lift each retention bar and disconnect.

Peel Back Wi-Fi Antennas

  • The antennas are glued to the top case — gently peel them back but do not remove completely.
  • This gives clearance for later component removal without damage.

Disconnect Daughterboard and CPU Fan Cables

  • Unplug all cables connected to the daughterboard on the right side.
  • Flip the retention bar on the main connector backward, then upward to release the cable.
  • Peel away the black tape to access the CPU fan connector and unplug it.

Unscrew the Logic Board and OLED Board

  • Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove all screws holding the mainboard and OLED board in place.
  • Once the OLED board is removed, one more screw will be exposed beneath it — remove it as well.

Disconnect LCD Cable Cluster

  • Carefully unplug all LCD-related cables, including webcam, touchscreen, and microphone connections.
  • These are fragile and expensive, so proceed slowly and with caution.

Remove Audio Board and BIOS Speaker

  • Unscrew and lift the audio board.
  • Also remove the BIOS speaker situated nearby.

Detach CPU Fan and Remove Hidden Screws

  • Remove two Phillips screws securing the CPU fan.
  • Uncover a hidden screw under anti-conductive tape that secures the power button daughterboard.

Unplug and Remove Power Button Daughterboard

  • Disconnect the power button cable by lifting its retention bar and pulling back.
  • This allows for complete motherboard removal later on.

Remove the SSD

  • Unscrew and remove the SSD from its slot.
  • This unit uses a shorter 22×22 M.2 drive with a helper bracket — remove it carefully.

Remove Final Screws and Lift Motherboard

  • Check for any remaining screws, especially near the I/O ports.
  • Once all are removed, carefully lift the motherboard out of the chassis.

Remove the Top Case and LCD

  • With hinges loosened, lift the top case and LCD straight up and out.
  • The laptop is now fully disassembled.
