Your Complete iPhone 13 Repair Guide: OLED Screen & Camera Lens Replacement


OVERVIEW:

In today’s TEKDEP Repair video, we’ll be replacing the LCD display on an iPhone 13 and repairing a broken camera lens. This unit was mailed to us by a customer who found us through our YouTube videos and repair services. The lens repair is courtesy of us, and we’ll be using a real sapphire glass replacement, just like Apple. This guide will demonstrate the most efficient way to replace the LCD with minimal tool usage while preserving the screen’s integrity for potential resale.


REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 1-2 Hours to complete and is of INTERMEDIATE difficulty, requiring careful handling of flex cables, precise heat application, and attention to screw placement.


STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a heat mat set between 70 to 80 degrees Celsius, a rear glass adhesive remover applied with a syringe, a suction cup holder, Phillips and tri-wing screwdrivers, tweezers, a plastic spudger, and a dry cotton swab. You may also use a blower to cool components and an ESD-safe stand for better support. Avoid isopropyl alcohol on the lens and proximity sensor area to prevent damage.


Inspect the Rear Camera Lens

  • Begin by checking the rear camera lens for black spots using a white background for clarity.
  • Determine which lens is affected; in this case, the 0.5 lens is impacted.
  • Confirm lens quality to decide if it needs replacement, and prepare to install a real Sapphire GL lens.

Heat and Loosen the Screen Adhesive

  • Set your heat mat to 70–75°C and allow the device to warm for a few minutes.
  • Apply a small amount of adhesive remover along the screen edge using a syringe.
  • Use a suction cup holder to lift the screen gently, avoiding pressure that could cause segment lines.

Begin Screen Separation

  • Once loosened, flip the device and apply light pressure at the corner of impact.
  • Slowly lift the screen using your palm, ensuring no LCD damage or lines appear.
  • Maintain constant temperature adjustment to avoid overheating.

Cool Down and Secure Device

  • Turn off the phone and use a blower if needed to cool it before internal work.
  • Secure the phone in an ESD stand to operate safely with both hands.
  • Prepare to open the device using the proper screwdrivers.

Disconnect the Battery and Remove Screws

  • Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the first screws and disconnect the battery.
  • Follow up with a tri-wing screwdriver for remaining internal screws.
  • Organize each screw by size and location to avoid confusion during reassembly.

Remove Metal Brackets and LCD Cables

  • Use tweezers to remove the metal bracket holding the battery connector.
  • Gently lift the screen flex cables with a plastic spudger or your fingers.
  • Set aside the screen and prepare to transfer internal components if needed.

Transfer the Proximity Sensor

  • Apply a little heat directly over the proximity sensor area to soften adhesive.
  • Use a plastic spudger to gently separate the sensor from the old screen.
  • Limit tweezer use to avoid ribbon cable puncture and maintain part integrity.

Reinstall the Proximity Sensor onto the New Screen

  • Carefully position the proximity sensor on the new screen, aligning connectors.
  • Reattach the metal bracket to secure the sensor in place.
  • Verify no debris or adhesive residue remains in the area.

Reconnect Internal Components

  • Connect the LCD digitizer, proximity sensor, and battery to the motherboard.
  • Install the metal bracket and use correct screws: Phillips for bottom, tri-wing for top.
  • Follow original screw positions exactly, noting lengths and placement.

Finalize Screen Reinstallation

  • Align and press the screen into place, ensuring even fit without side gaps.
  • Reinsert and tighten all panel screws along the bottom of the phone.
  • Power on the device to test functionality before proceeding to the lens.

Prepare for Lens Removal

  • Do not apply alcohol; use dry tools and minimal heat as needed.
  • Angle the phone so debris falls away from the lens during scraping.
  • Use a precision scraper or X-Acto blade to remove adhesive carefully.

Clear Lens Area and Clean

  • Remove all debris around the lens using a dry cotton swab—no liquids.
  • Inspect for any remaining glue or damage to the inner lens surface.
  • Ensure the camera lens area is completely clean before new adhesive application.

Install the New Sapphire Lens

  • Peel and align the new lens adhesive without leaving fingerprints.
  • Slide the lens into position, press firmly, and ensure a clean seal.
  • Allow curing and test camera functionality to confirm image clarity and no black spots.
