REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 1.5 to 2 hours to complete and is of ADVANCED difficulty, requiring extensive knowledge of component removal and delicate handling of internal connectors.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a 1.5mm pentalobe screwdriver, a heating mat set between 70 to 80 degrees Celsius, a curved screen disassembler tool, tri-wing, Torx, and Phillips screwdrivers, isopropyl alcohol (99%) for adhesive loosening, and standard plastic tools like spudgers or picks for prying and separating components safely.

Remove Dockside Pentalobe Screws

  • Begin by using a 1.5mm pentalobe screwdriver to remove the two screws located at the bottom of the device near the charging port.
  • Set these aside in a safe place as they are essential for reassembly.
  • Ensure the heating mat is already pre-heated between 70–80°C to loosen the adhesive on the screen.

Heat the Screen for Separation

  • Place the iPhone 14 Plus on the heating mat and allow it to warm up adequately.
  • Monitor the temperature to ensure it does not exceed 80°C, as higher heat may damage internal components.
  • Wait 5–10 minutes for the adhesive to soften sufficiently.

Use Curved Screen Disassembler Tool

  • Utilize the curved screen disassembler (typically used for iPads) to gently pry around the screen edges.
  • This tool is ideal for minimizing damage to the fragile Super Retina display.
  • Carefully lift the screen—note that the screen may already be cracked, so proceed with extra caution.

Disconnect Front Screen Components

  • Upon opening, observe that the front screen contains the proximity sensor and the digitizer/LCD connections.
  • Avoid disturbing these as they are still linked to the motherboard.
  • The Face ID sensor is also connected through the proximity assembly—detach carefully if necessary.

Transition to Back Glass Removal

  • Flip to the back side of the phone—Apple introduced hinges in the iPhone 14 Plus that make the back glass easier to remove.
  • Use gentle prying as the adhesive is weaker compared to the front.
  • Carefully lift the rear panel, being mindful of the NFC wireless charging coil embedded inside.

Access Internal Components from the Back

  • The internal components—including charging port, battery, and cameras—are accessible from the rear.
  • Unless you’re replacing the front screen, all repairs should ideally be performed from the back.
  • Slowly detach the cracked rear glass and place it aside.

Remove All Screws (Tri-Wing, Torx, Phillips)

  • Begin removing all visible screws using the appropriate drivers for each (tri-wing, Torx, Phillips).
  • Keep them organized, as multiple screw types are used for securing different modules.
  • The removal includes brackets and covers over flex cables and connectors.

Remove GPS and Camera Modules

  • Detach the GPS module once uncovered.
  • Disconnect and remove the front-facing camera, which includes the selfie cam and Face ID components.
  • Proceed to carefully remove the back camera—note its similarity to the iPhone 14 design.

Disconnect Battery Connector

  • Identify the battery connector and carefully pry it up from the board.
  • Although a SIM slot may appear present, note that US models contain an eSIM reader only—no physical SIM card fits.
  • Disconnecting the battery at this stage is crucial for safety.

Remove Top Speaker from Frame

  • Use the correct screwdriver to remove screws securing the top speaker.
  • Note that it is no longer part of the screen assembly (as per iPhone 13+ design).
  • Carefully detach and lift the speaker unit from the internal frame.

Apply Isopropyl Alcohol to Mid-Frame Battery

  • Apply 99% isopropyl alcohol along the battery seams.
  • Let it sit on the heated mat for 5–10 minutes to loosen the adhesive underneath.
  • Gently pry the battery from the mid-frame housing without bending or damaging it.

Remove Loudspeaker and Taptic Engine

  • Locate and unscrew the loudspeaker module at the bottom.
  • Disconnect and remove the Taptic Engine directly beside it.
  • These components sit above the charging port flex and are easy to identify.

Extract eSIM Reader Module

  • Find the eSIM reader module in the lower central part of the device.
  • This model is only applicable to U.S. units; other global variants have physical SIM slots.
  • Gently pry and remove the eSIM reader.

Remove Charging Dock Assembly

  • Continue by unscrewing the charging dock components.
  • The charging port is connected with pin connectors and flex cables—lift gently to avoid tearing.
  • Set the dock assembly aside after removal.

Final Step: Remove Sandwich Board

  • Finally, disconnect and lift the main logic board (“sandwich board”) containing the A15 Bionic chip.
  • This board sits at the center and connects multiple flex cables.
  • After its removal, you’re left with just the mid-frame and charging port.

CONCLUSION:

This teardown of the iPhone 14 Plus revealed Apple’s shift toward more repair-friendly features, like front-and-back access and a mid-frame design. The back panel’s easier removal highlights thoughtful engineering changes. Whether you’re replacing a battery, camera, or logic board, accessing components through the rear is now more efficient. Just be mindful of the delicate sensors and adhesive placement throughout. Take your time, follow each step carefully, and you’ll be well-equipped to handle this advanced repair.
