REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 2 to 3 hours to complete and is of moderate to high difficulty, requiring careful disassembly and attention to small parts and connectors.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

You’ll need a Phillips screwdriver, plastic pry tool, soldering iron (optional), flat metal spudger, wire snips, adhesive (B7000 recommended), and clamps or a heavy object to press the keyboard.

Remove Bottom Case Screws

  • Flip the ThinkBook over to access the back panel.
  • Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove all visible screws.
  • Set the screws aside in a safe container.

Pry Open the Case

  • Insert a plastic pry tool between the top and bottom case seams.
  • Work around the edges to release all internal clips.
  • Carefully lift the bottom panel away.

Disconnect Battery

  • Locate the battery connector on the motherboard.
  • Gently unplug it to ensure the unit is safe to work on.
  • This step prevents accidental power during disassembly.

Remove Battery

  • Unscrew the three Phillips screws securing the battery.
  • Carefully lift and remove the battery.
  • Set it aside in a safe spot.

Remove Storage Devices

  • Unscrew and unplug the 2.5″ hard drive.
  • Remove the SSD by unscrewing and gently lifting it out.
  • Set both drives aside.

Disconnect Wi-Fi Card

  • Unplug the Wi-Fi antenna cables.
  • You can leave the card screwed in as it won’t block keyboard access.

Disconnect Internal Cables (Right Side)

  • Unplug the right-hand speaker connector.
  • Disconnect the LCD cable at the top.
  • Unplug the trackpad cable, keyboard ribbon, and keyboard backlight cable.

Disconnect Internal Cables (Left Side)

  • Disconnect the IO board cable.
  • Unplug the cooling fan connector.
  • Leave the BIOS speaker plugged in.

Remove Cooling Fan

  • Unscrew the fan.
  • Unroute the Wi-Fi antenna cables from their clips.
  • Remove the cooling fan.

Unscrew the Logic Board

  • Remove all screws holding down the motherboard.
  • Gently lift the board while opening the laptop slightly to loosen the hinge.
  • Set the board aside.

Remove IO Board and Brackets

  • Unscrew the left LCD hinge screw and small bracket near the USB port.
  • Remove the screw holding the IO board.
  • Lift and remove the IO board.

Unplug the Power Button Assembly

  • Peel back the tape covering the power button cable.
  • Unplug the power button cable from the board.

Remove Power Button

  • Use a plastic spudger to lift the power button from the top case.
  • Take note of how the button sits on two plastic standoffs.

Remove Tape Covers

  • Peel off two adhesive layers and a protective cover blocking keyboard access.
  • This will expose the plastic rivets securing the rigidity plate.

Melt or Cut Plastic Rivets

  • Use a soldering iron at 150-180°C to melt the heads of the rivets.
  • Alternatively, use wire snips or a flat metal pry tool to cut off the rivet heads.
  • This step can take time—be thorough.

Remove Rigidity Plate

  • Once all rivets are cut or melted, lift and remove the rigidity plate.
  • Temporarily move the right speaker out of the way.

Remove Old Keyboard

  • Push the old keyboard up from below.
  • Lift it out of the top case.
  • Discard the worn-out keyboard.

Install New Keyboard

  • Lay the new keyboard face-down into position.
  • Press it down so it clicks onto the remaining standoffs.

Reattach Rigidity Plate

  • Place the rigidity plate back down onto the keyboard.
  • Apply adhesive (like B7000) to the bottom before placing.
  • Clamp or press it for 30–60 minutes.

Reinstall Power Button

  • Lay the power button switch and board back into place.
  • Make sure it aligns with the posts and arms.
  • Screw it in and reconnect the two cables (LED and main).

Reinstall IO Board

  • Reinsert the IO board and secure with screws.
  • Close the left hinge and screw it back down.
  • Route Wi-Fi antenna cables through grommets.

Reinstall Logic Board

  • Position the logic board back into the case.
  • Secure it with all screws.
  • Reconnect Wi-Fi antennas and place the shielding cover.

Reconnect Cables (Right Side)

  • Reconnect LCD cable, right speaker, and trackpad.
  • Peel protective layers and stick keyboard ribbons to their places.

Reconnect Cables (Left Side)

  • Plug in keyboard backlight ribbon.
  • Reconnect IO board cable, power button cable, and LED.

Reinstall Cooling Fan

  • Plug in and route the fan cable.
  • Ensure antenna wires are under the fan correctly.
  • Screw the fan into place.

Reinstall SSD and 2.5″ Drive

  • Slot the SSD into position and screw it in.
  • Do the same for the 2.5″ HDD.

Reinstall Battery

  • Slide the battery into place.
  • Screw it down with 3 Phillips screws.
  • Reconnect the battery cable.

Reattach Bottom Case

  • Carefully route the speaker cable to avoid pinching.
  • Press the bottom case on until it clicks into place.
  • Reinsert and tighten all screws.

Test the Laptop

  • Flip the laptop over and connect the charger.
  • Power on the laptop.
  • Confirm the keyboard, backlighting, and trackpad are working.
