Lenovo Yoga 6 – Top Case Assembly, Keyboard & Power Button Replacement Guide

OVERVIEW:

In this repair guide, we’ll walk you through the full top case replacement process on a Lenovo Yoga 6, model 13ALC05. The primary reason for this repair is a broken power button assembly located on the left side of the top case, which makes the power button non-functional. You’ll be shown how to completely disassemble the laptop, including removing internal components like the SSD, battery, Wi-Fi card, logic board, and display. The top case will then be swapped out, and all parts reinstalled. Follow the steps carefully for a successful repair.

REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 2 to 3 HOURS to complete and is of INTERMEDIATE difficulty, requiring careful handling of internal components and attention to cable routing and screw placements.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a T5 screwdriver to remove the bottom case screws, a Phillips head screwdriver (small size) for internal components, a plastic spudger for safely prying and disconnecting parts, and a plastic card for careful detachment of adhesive components.

Remove the Bottom Case

  • Use a T5 screwdriver to remove all bottom screws; note that one screw may be missing as shown in the video.
  • Use a plastic spudger to gently separate the bottom case from the top case assembly.
  • Set the bottom case aside for reinstallation later.

Disconnect the Battery

  • Immediately disconnect the battery before working on any internal components to ensure safety.
  • This step is crucial to avoid short circuits during disassembly.

Pull the SSD

  • Use a Phillips head screwdriver to unscrew the SSD retention screw.
  • Carefully slide and remove the SSD from its slot and set it aside.

Remove the Battery

  • Gently lift the battery out and set it aside.

Extract the Wi-Fi Card

  • Use the spudger to remove the plastic cover over the Wi-Fi card.
  • Unplug the two Wi-Fi antenna cables.
  • Unscrew the Wi-Fi card and remove it from the board.

  • Disconnect the LCD display cable from the logic board.

Take away the LCD and the Separate Top Case

  • Unscrew three hinge screws on each side to detach the LCD from the assembly.
  • Open the laptop to separate the LCD from the top case.
  • Set the LCD screen aside carefully.

Remove the Logic Board

  • Unscrew the bracket for the right-side USB-C port.
  • Remove the center screw from the logic board.
  • Gently lift the logic board and set it aside.

Remove the Trackpad from the Old Top Case

  • Disconnect the trackpad cable from both ends.
  • Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the four screws holding the trackpad.
  • Remove the securing tape and gently lift the trackpad from the old top case.
  • Set the old top case aside.

Install the Trackpad into the New Top Case

  • Align the trackpad with the slots on the new top case.
  • Screw it in using the original four Phillips head screws.

Reinstall the LCD Display

  • Position the LCD against the top case while ensuring cables are not pinched.
  • Slowly open the unit and make sure all cables are routed properly.
  • Plug in the LCD and webcam cables.
  • Secure both hinges using the original screws.

Re-establish SSD and Battery

  • Insert the SSD into its slot and secure it with the retention screw.
  • Reinstall the battery and screw it into place.
  • Plug the battery connector back into the motherboard.

Reattach the Bottom Case

  • Place the bottom case back on the unit and press around the edges to snap it into place.
  • Secure it with the T5 screws.

Power On and Test the Laptop
