REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 2–3 HOURS to complete and is of ADVANCED difficulty, requiring precise handling of delicate connectors, careful cable management, and full disassembly of major MacBook components.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a T5 and T8 Torx screwdriver set, a Phillips screwdriver, plastic spudgers for safe disconnection of cables, and a clean workspace to lay out components. Optional tools like tweezers and a magnetic project mat will help keep screws organized during this complex repair.

Disconnect the Battery and Components

  • Unplug the battery and disconnect the trackpad and IO board coax cable.
  • Unplug the cooling fan, MagSafe port, webcam mic, LCD, right speaker, keyboard, and Wi-Fi antennas.
  • Remove the hinge screw covers and disconnect two additional cables for the speaker and IO board.

This initial step ensures all power is disconnected before continuing disassembly. Carefully remove every cable in view and set aside the screws as you go.

Remove the IO Board and Wi-Fi Card

  • Use a T5 screwdriver to unscrew and remove the IO board coax cable.
  • Remove the Wi-Fi P card and then the SSD from its slot.
  • Unscrew and lift out the IO board on the left-hand side.

Make sure all surrounding cables are out of the way to avoid damaging them while removing these components.

Remove Cooling Fan and Logic Board

  • Unscrew the CPU cooling fan and unplug its connector.
  • Unscrew the two MagSafe screws that also anchor the logic board.
  • Remove the logic board, making sure no cables are snagged underneath.

This step requires delicate maneuvering. Be mindful of cable positions to prevent pinching or tearing.

Disconnect LCD and IO Components

  • Use a T8 to remove the rear IO board standoff screw.
  • Remove screws holding the webcam mic and Wi-Fi antennas.
  • Unscrew all LCD hinge screws to free the LCD from the top case.

You may find hidden surprises like an SD card—set aside anything loose for reinstallation later.

Remove Speakers, Battery, and Trackpad

  • Use a T5 screwdriver to remove the left and right speakers.
  • Remove the battery by unplugging it and lifting it out.
  • Unplug and lift out the trackpad flex cable.

Now the old top case is fully cleared and ready to be replaced.

Install New Top Case and Refit LCD

  • Set the new top case in place, holding the hinges as you close the LCD.
  • Secure it temporarily using one T8 screw at each hinge to prevent shifting.

This temporary mounting makes further reassembly much safer and more stable.

Install Logic Board and MagSafe

  • Place the MagSafe port first, aligning it with screw holes.
  • Drop in the logic board without covering nearby cables.
  • Plug in the MagSafe cable to the board.

Be sure cables for keyboard and display remain free during logic board placement.

Reconnect Cooling Fan and IO Board

  • Slide the cooling fan beneath the logic board before screwing in the board.
  • Plug in the fan and IO board cable.
  • Plug in the microphone array and other small connectors nearby.

Now the core of your MacBook is reinstalled and secured.

Secure Logic Board and MagSafe

  • Use T5 screws to secure the logic board and the MagSafe standoff.
  • Install two screws to secure the MagSafe port.
  • Screw down the CPU fan with three screws.

This step completes the essential power and processing components.

Reinstall SSD, Wi-Fi, and Secure LCD

  • Reinsert the SSD and Wi-Fi card and screw them in.
  • Switch to T8 and finish securing the LCD hinges to the new top case.

Make sure connectors are not trapped beneath the logic board or display.

Reconnect Webcam and Wi-Fi Antennas

  • Plug in the webcam microphone and Wi-Fi antennas.
  • Plug in the LCD connector last.

Always do a final check to ensure all cables are seated properly before closing up.

Install Speakers and Coax Cable

  • Reinstall the left and right speakers with their screws.
  • Connect the IO board coax cable and retention brackets.

Double-check speaker cables are routed correctly and fully connected.

Reinstall Battery and Trackpad Flex

  • Press the battery into place starting from the right side.
  • Plug in the trackpad flex cable.

Press each battery cell down firmly for good adhesion to the top case.

Final Assembly and Power-On

  • Add the final retention bracket and two T5 screws.
  • Reattach end caps and hinge screw covers.
  • Plug in the battery and test the device.

Check power, trackpad, keyboard, and charging functionality before sealing the case.

Replace Bottom Cover

  • Align and place the bottom cover.
  • Insert the pentalobe screws—short ones in the middle, others anywhere.

Your MacBook should now be fully functional with a brand-new top case!

CONCLUSION:

This repair successfully replaced the top case on a MacBook Pro A1502. The original battery swap didn’t fix the issue, but replacing the top case resolved the keyboard and trackpad problems. Each internal component was carefully removed and reinstalled, and the device passed final tests. With patience and precision, this fix is achievable for experienced DIYers. Always double-check connections and take your time.
