REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 1.5 to 2 hours to complete and is of INTERMEDIATE difficulty, requiring careful handling of components and knowledge of MacBook internal parts.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a Pentalobe screwdriver to remove the screws on the bottom case, a T5 Torx screwdriver for internal components, a suction cup tool for lifting the bottom case, and isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher) to soften adhesive. Additionally, a plastic pry tool or spudger will help remove the battery and other internal parts safely.

Remove the Bottom Case

  • Use a Pentalobe screwdriver to remove the screws holding the bottom case of the MacBook.
  • There are several screws to remove — make sure you note their sizes.
  • Once all screws are removed, use a suction cup to gently lift the bottom case away from the MacBook.
  • Carefully push the top case away and pull the bottom case toward you to release the clasps on the front.

Disconnect the Battery

  • Once the bottom case is removed, you’ll be able to access the battery.
  • Peel back a taped cover to reveal the battery management unit flex cable and connector.
  • Use your T5 screwdriver to disconnect the battery management unit cable.
  • Also, remove the jumper from the battery daughter board using the same T5 screwdriver.
  • This makes the unit safe to continue working on.

Remove Trackpad to Avoid Damage

  • Using the T5 screwdriver, remove the screws securing the trackpad’s flex cable to the mainboard.
  • Once these screws are removed, peel the trackpad flex cable away from the battery.
  • For first-timers, we recommend removing the trackpad entirely to prevent any damage when removing the battery.
  • Carefully unscrew the four screws on each side and two screws in the center that hold the trackpad in place.

Remove the Trackpad

  • Open the unit slowly and carefully feed the trackpad flex cable through a cutout in the MacBook.
  • Ensure the trackpad standoff washers are not lost, as these are essential for proper trackpad function.
  • When the trackpad is removed, place it aside carefully.

Break the Adhesive on the Battery

  • Apply isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher) around the edges of the battery to soften the adhesive.
  • Wait a minute for the alcohol to break down the glue.

Remove the Battery

  • Using a spudger or pry tool, carefully work under the battery without applying excessive pressure.
  • Pry the battery loose from the unit, starting from one side, then move along the center and other side until the battery is free.

Remove the Battery Management Unit Flex Cable

  • Use the T5 screwdriver to remove the screws securing the battery management unit’s flex cable.
  • Disconnect the flex cable from the battery connector, ensuring it’s removed cleanly.

Remove Remaining Adhesive

  • After removing the battery, use more isopropyl alcohol to soak any remaining adhesive strips.
  • Use a metal spudger to scrape off the remaining adhesive gently.
  • Be careful not to damage the top case during this process.

Clean the Area

  • Clean the area thoroughly to ensure no leftover adhesive or residue remains.
  • Use a dry cloth to wipe off any excess isopropyl alcohol and let the surface dry.

Install the New Battery

  • Take the new battery and peel off the protective covers from the adhesive strips.
  • Align the battery carefully, starting with the middle section, then position the cables running to the second and third cells.
  • Apply even pressure to ensure the battery adheres securely to the case.

Reconnect the Battery Management Unit Flex Cable

  • Insert the smaller end of the flex cable into the battery connector, ensuring it fits correctly.
  • Attach the larger end of the flex cable to the logic board, ensuring a secure connection.
  • If the battery is not charging correctly, re-seat the cable or replace the flex cable entirely.

Reinstall the Trackpad

  • Place the trackpad back into the unit and ensure the flex cable is properly positioned.
  • Carefully feed the flex cable through the cutout and reconnect it to the mainboard.
  • Secure the trackpad with the eight screws — four on each side, and two shorter screws in the center.
  • Tighten all screws just enough to keep them secure, but avoid overtightening, as this can affect trackpad function.

Reattach the Trackpad Retention Bracket

  • Reinstall the retention bracket for the trackpad flex cable using the T5 screwdriver.
  • Ensure the screws are secured tightly, but do not overtighten to avoid damaging the flex cable.

Secure the Battery Jumper

  • Use the “pancake screw” to secure the jumper between the battery and logic board.
  • Tighten this screw fully to ensure proper contact between the pads.

Reconnect the Battery Management Unit Flex Cable to the Logic Board

  • Reconnect the battery management unit flex cable to the logic board.
  • Ensure it’s fully seated to guarantee that the battery will function properly.

Reinstall the Taped Cover

  • Reattach the taped cover over the battery management unit and flex cables.
  • This helps protect the internal components from dust and other debris.

Attach the Bottom Case

  • Place the bottom case back onto the MacBook and slide it into position.
  • Secure it by pushing down gently, ensuring the little feet engage properly to lock it in place.

Secure the Bottom Case with Pentalobe Screws

  • Use the Pentalobe screwdriver to secure the screws back into place.
  • Start with the shortest screws for the front and sides, followed by the longer ones for the top.
  • Tighten all screws carefully to avoid damaging the threads.

Test the New Battery

  • Once the MacBook is reassembled, plug in the charger and turn it on.
  • Ensure the battery is charging properly and the percentage is accurately displayed.

CONCLUSION:

Replacing the battery on your MacBook Pro 13-inch (2016) can extend the life of your device, especially if you’re dealing with a swollen or degraded battery. By following these detailed steps, you can restore the performance and functionality of your MacBook. Always be sure to handle the internal components carefully to avoid any damage, and ensure proper reinstallation of all cables and screws.
