REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 2 to 3 HOURS to complete and is of INTERMEDIATE difficulty, requiring careful handling of delicate components and familiarity with internal MacBook layouts.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a suction cup for lifting the bottom case, a Pentalobe screwdriver for the base screws, a T5 and T3 Torx screwdriver for internal components, a PL1 screwdriver for the Wi-Fi vent module, a plastic spudger for safely disconnecting flex cables, and tweezers to assist with delicate cable routing and alignment.

Remove the Bottom Case

  • Flip the MacBook over and remove six pentalobe screws: two long ones at the top and four shorter ones at the bottom.
  • Use a suction cup or your fingers to lift the bottom case.
  • Push the top case away and pull the bottom case toward yourself to release the clips and sliding fingers.

Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a plastic spudger to unplug the battery management unit flex cable.
  • With a T5 screwdriver, remove the pancake screw securing the jumper from the logic board to the battery board.
  • This safely cuts off battery power so the unit can be worked on.

Remove Wi-Fi Vent and LCD Screws

  • Using the same T5, remove four screws securing the Wi-Fi vent module and LCD board to the top case.
  • Before removing the final screw, unplug the Wi-Fi antenna cables.
  • Remove the bracket that holds the antennas in place.

Disconnect LCD Proximity Sensor

  • Switch to a T3 screwdriver and remove two screws from the LCD proximity sensor.
  • Unplug the sensor which tells the MacBook when the lid is closed or open.
  • Set it aside carefully for reinstallation later.

Remove LCD Hinge Covers

  • Still using the T3 screwdriver, remove four screws holding the hinge covers.
  • Carefully lift and remove the hinge covers from the top case.
  • These expose the internal mounting screws of the LCD.

Remove LCD Bungee Screws

  • Using T3, remove four long screws holding the bungees in place.
  • These provide hinge tension and stability when opening/closing the display.
  • Screws may stay lodged even when loose; remove carefully.

Disconnect LCD Display Connector

  • Remove four T3 screws securing the LCD display connector bracket.
  • The top two screws are shorter; bottom two are longer.
  • This step ensures the display cable doesn’t get kinked or damaged.

Remove Wi-Fi Vent Screws

  • Switch to a PL1 screwdriver and remove all screws on both sides of the Wi-Fi vent module.
  • These help detach it completely from the top case.
  • Set them aside in order for easy reassembly.

Remove LCD Assembly

  • Unscrew six T8 screws—three on each hinge location.
  • Use a plastic spudger to remove the Wi-Fi vent module and unplug the LCD display connector.
  • Open the MacBook and lift off the damaged LCD assembly.

Prepare New LCD Assembly

  • Set aside the old LCD and place the new one on your work surface.
  • Open the hinges slightly to slide the top case onto the new display.
  • Hold the hinges while closing the unit to avoid damaging the top case.

Secure LCD to Top Case

  • Reinstall the six T8 screws to secure the LCD to the top case.
  • Make sure they’re tight—loose screws can cause the display to fall closed.
  • Confirm hinge alignment before proceeding.

Reconnect LCD Proximity Sensor

  • Plug the LCD proximity sensor back in immediately to avoid forgetting later.
  • Use the T3 to reinstall its bracket.
  • Ensure the hook on the logic board is correctly aligned before fastening.

Reinstall LCD Bungee Screws

  • Install the four T3 screws that hold the LCD bungees.
  • They may take some alignment; they will click into place.
  • Don’t force them—patience is key.

Reinstall Wi-Fi Vent Module

  • Place the vent module back into position.
  • Use tweezers to feed the antenna cables through the cutout and up into the correct path.
  • Align the bracket carefully and make sure all cables pass through properly.

Plug in Wi-Fi Antennas and Secure Bracket

  • Connect all Wi-Fi antennas in place.
  • Secure the bracket using the T5 screwdriver.
  • Also secure the LCD board and vent module to the top case with T5.

Secure LCD Display Connector

  • Plug in the LCD display connector.
  • Use four T3 screws (2 short at the top, 2 long at the bottom) to resecure the bracket.
  • Ensure the cable sits cleanly beneath the bracket to prevent pinching.

Reinstall Touch Bar Bracket

  • Use two T3 screws to reinstall the bracket holding the touch bar connector and LCD proximity sensor.
  • Hook the bracket into place before tightening the screws.
  • Double-check alignment before finalizing.

Secure Wi-Fi Vent Screws

  • Take your PL1 screwdriver and reinstall the many screws on the vent module.
  • Start from the edges and work inward.
  • Tighten all screws evenly.

Reattach LCD Hinge Covers

  • Place hinge covers back over the hinge areas.
  • Secure them with four T3 screws.
  • These finalize the exterior appearance and protect internal hinge hardware.

Reconnect Battery

  • Use the T5 to screw the pancake jumper back in place.
  • Reconnect the battery management unit flex cable.
  • Ensure the cable is seated properly to avoid charging issues.

Power On and Test

  • Plug in a charger and power on the MacBook.
  • Confirm display functionality and battery charging.
  • Verify the proximity sensor by opening/closing the lid and observing fan spin down.

Reinstall Bottom Case

  • Line up one corner slightly off the edge.
  • Push down and slide the case forward to engage the vent fingers.
  • Install the two long pentalobe screws at the top and four shorter ones at the bottom.

CONCLUSION:

This MacBook Pro LCD replacement involved a precise and careful process, requiring the removal and reinstallation of many components. From disconnecting the battery safely to aligning the new display perfectly, every step ensures a clean and functional repair. Testing the display, charging, and sleep functionality confirms success. Whether you’re doing this at home or as a professional, thoroughness is key. Always double-check your connections and test before final assembly.
