REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 1 to 1.5 HOURS to complete and is of INTERMEDIATE difficulty, requiring careful handling of internal connectors and adhesive removal techniques.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a T5 screwdriver for removing internal screws, a suction cup (optional) for lifting the bottom case, isopropyl alcohol to break down adhesive, a flat-edge scraper or metal prying tool for battery removal, and a plastic spudger for disconnecting delicate components safely.

Remove the Bottom Cover

  • Flip the MacBook Pro over to expose the screws on the bottom case.
  • Use a suction cup to assist in lifting the bottom cover if necessary.
  • Gently remove the bottom cover to access the internal components.

Disconnect the Battery Daughter Board Flex Cable

  • Locate the battery daughter board flex cable and disconnect both sides.
  • This cable will be reused with the new battery, so set it aside carefully.
  • Take care not to pull harshly on the connectors to avoid damage.

Remove Battery Connection Screws

  • Use a T5 screwdriver to remove the screw connecting the battery to the power point.
  • Also remove the two T5 screws that secure the trackpad flex cable to the logic board.
  • Gently unplug the trackpad flex cable and separate it from the battery.

Remove Battery Daughter Board Screws

  • Identify the two T5 screws securing the battery daughter board to the top case.
  • Remove both screws using the same T5 driver.
  • This step allows the battery assembly to move freely for extraction.

Apply Isopropyl Alcohol to Battery Adhesive

  • Generously apply isopropyl alcohol around the battery’s base.
  • Allow time for the alcohol to penetrate and loosen the adhesive.
  • Let it sit for a few moments before proceeding to pry the battery.

Pry Off the Old Battery

  • Use a flat-edge prying tool to gently lift the battery off the top case.
  • Ensure the tool has no sharp points to avoid puncturing the battery.
  • Gradually work your way along the adhesive areas until the battery is free.

Remove Remaining Adhesive Strips

  • After battery removal, apply more isopropyl alcohol to the remaining black adhesive strips.
  • Use a metal flat-edge scraper to remove all leftover glue and adhesive.
  • Continue scraping until the surface is clean and smooth for the new battery.

Prepare and Install New Battery

  • Peel off the protective film covering the adhesive on the new battery.
  • Align the battery using the top two T5 screw points as guides.
  • Press down firmly to seat the battery in place and remove any remaining film.

Secure Battery Daughter Board

  • Reinsert the two T5 screws to secure the battery daughter board.
  • Double-check that the battery is fully seated and flush with the top case.
  • Tighten screws just enough to hold components without over-torquing.

Reconnect Battery Flex Cable

  • Take the battery flex cable and reconnect it; align the larger side to the logic board and smaller side to the daughter board.
  • Ensure proper orientation; if it’s not fitting, flip the cable.
  • Carefully press both connectors in place.

Reconnect Trackpad Flex Cable

  • Plug the trackpad flex cable back into its socket.
  • Use a T5 pancake screw to secure it into position.
  • Ensure the cable is firmly attached before continuing.

Final Battery Screw and Closure

  • Insert and tighten the final T5 screw to secure the battery to the daughter board.
  • Confirm that all connections are secure and properly aligned.
  • Reinstall the bottom case and press gently to snap it into place.

CONCLUSION:

Replacing the battery on a MacBook Pro A1708 involves several internal components, but with care and patience, it can be done at home. Always use proper tools and take time when working with adhesives. Rechecking each step will ensure a clean and stable installation. With everything secure and reassembled, your MacBook should be back in top form. Thanks for following along with the repair!
