Expert Macbook Pro Keyboard and Backlighting Replacement Professional Service A2442 M1 Model

Replacing the keyboard and backlight on your MacBook Pro M1 (14-inch and 16-inch models) is a complex process requiring the removal of multiple components, including the logic board. Follow this step-by-step guide carefully to avoid damage.


STEPS:

Tools You Need

  • Pentalobe Screwdriver
  • Suction Cup
  • T3 Screwdriver
  • T5 Screwdriver
  • T6 Screwdriver
  • T8 Screwdriver
  • PL1 Screwdriver
  • Plastic Spudger
  • Tweezers
  • Magnetic Mat (optional, for organizing screws)

Remove the Bottom Case

  • Flip the MacBook over and remove the eight Pentalobe screws (four long screws at the top, four short ones at the bottom).
  • Use a suction cup to lift the bottom case, then slide it towards you to release the clips.

Disconnect the Battery

  • Locate the battery management unit flex cable and unplug it.
  • Remove the two T3 screws securing the trackpad flex cable bracket.
  • Disconnect the trackpad flex cable and peel off the battery management unit flex cable.
  • Remove the T5 pancake screw to disconnect the battery completely.

Remove the Wi-Fi Vent Module and LCD Cables

  • Remove the hinge cover screws using a T5 screwdriver.
  • Remove the four T5 screws securing the Wi-Fi vent module.
  • Use a T3 screwdriver to remove the brackets securing the LCD connectors.
  • Remove the PL1 screws (nine in total) securing the Wi-Fi vent module.
  • Disconnect the Wi-Fi antenna and LCD flex cables, then remove the Wi-Fi vent module.

Remove the Logic Board Screws and Brackets

  • Use a T3 screwdriver to remove retention brackets for:
    • LCD proximity sensor
    • MagSafe 3 charger port
    • USB-C/Thunderbolt ports
    • Microphone and headphone jack
    • Touch ID sensor
  • Remove the adhesive pads covering additional logic board screws.
  • Remove all T5 logic board screws.
  • Remove the remaining T6 screws (longest T6 screw is near the top left corner).

Disconnect and Remove the Logic Board

  • Disconnect:
    • Touch ID cable (critical, as it’s tied to the logic board)
    • USB-C ports, speakers, CPU cooling fans
    • Keyboard and backlight cables
    • Microphone, headphone jack, MagSafe 3 charging port, LCD proximity sensor
  • Carefully lift the left side of the logic board first to clear the HDMI port.
  • Remove the board and set it aside.

Detach the Cooling Fans

  • Remove the two T5 screws and three T3 screws securing the cooling fans.
  • Lift the fans out of the unit.

Remove the LCD Assembly

  • Remove six T8 screws securing the hinges.
  • Open the MacBook slightly and lift the LCD assembly away from the top case.

Bring Out Touch ID Bracket

  • Remove the T3 screws securing the bracket.
  • Carefully pry up the Touch ID flex cable with a plastic spudger.
  • Remove six T3 screws holding the Touch ID bracket in place and remove it.

Remove the Keyboard Backlight

  • Use a plastic spudger to carefully lift the microphone assembly off the backlight.
  • Start at a corner and peel off the backlight sheet.

Removing the Old Keyboard

  • Use a plastic spudger to gently lift the edge of the keyboard.
  • Grab the keyboard with a finger and slowly pull it away from the assembly.
  • Remove all the PL1 screws around the perimeter to detach the keyboard completely.

Installing the New Keyboard and Backlighting

  • Place the new keyboard into position, aligning it carefully.
  • Install all the perimeter PL1 screws to secure it in place.
  • Remove protective film from the new backlighting and clean any remaining debris.
  • Align and place the new backlighting, ensuring proper orientation.

Reinstalling Touch ID and Logic Board

  • Feed the Touch ID cable through the assembly and position it correctly.
  • Secure the Touch ID bracket with T3 screws, ensuring snug but not overly tight placement.
  • Install the CPU cooling fans using T5 screws for outer edges and T3 screws for the rest.
  • Carefully slot the logic board back into position, ensuring all cables are accessible.
  • Align the HDMI and USB-C connectors while keeping all flex cables clear.
  • Count and verify all connectors are visible before securing the logic board.

Connecting and Securing Components

  • Plug in all connectors: Touch ID, USB-C ports, speakers, CPU fans, keyboard, backlight, microphone array, and battery.
  • Secure the logic board with T6 screws at key points and T5 screws for additional stability.
  • Attach the LCD assembly by aligning the hinges and securing them with T8 screws.
  • Reconnect the LCD cables, ensuring proper routing and securing them with their brackets.
  • Attach the Wi-Fi vent module and LCD hinge covers using T5 screws.
  • Secure all additional connectors and brackets using T3 screws.

Final Assembly and Testing

  • Reinstall the trackpad flex cable and its retention bracket.
  • Plug in a charger to confirm the MacBook powers on, keyboard functions correctly, and charging is detected.
  • Shut down the device, replace the bottom case, and secure it with PL1 screws.
