M2 Max 16” MacBook Pro – Full Teardown, Repair & Disassembly Guide

OVERVIEW:

In this teardown, we take a detailed look inside the 2023 16-inch M2 Max MacBook Pro, a powerful machine featuring 64GB of RAM and a 2TB SSD. From removing the bottom case to accessing the logic board, every step is meticulously walked through. This guide is ideal for anyone looking to understand the teardown process or planning a repair on this specific model. The teardown showcases all internal components, connectors, and tools used. Dive into the step-by-step disassembly to see how Apple engineered this powerhouse laptop.

REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 2–3 HOURS to complete and is of ADVANCED difficulty, requiring careful handling of fragile connectors, layered components, and multiple specialized screwdrivers.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a pentalobe screwdriver, a suction cup, a T5 screwdriver, a spudger, a 4.5mm hex head, a PL1 screwdriver, a T3 screwdriver, a T8 screwdriver, a T2 screwdriver, and a plastic card or safe prying tool.

Remove Bottom Case

  • Power down the machine completely before starting the disassembly.
  • Use a pentalobe screwdriver to remove the bottom case screws, noting that they are color-matched and differ in length (shorter in front, longer in back).
  • Use a suction cup to lift the bottom cover, pulling upwards at the hinge side to release clips that secure the panel.

Disconnect Battery Module

  • Use a T5 screwdriver to remove the small cover over the trackpad area.
  • Peel back the flex cable underneath and disconnect the battery module’s flex cable which controls power flow and status reporting.
  • Remove the screw securing the main battery connector and bend the connector upward to cut power.

Remove Cover Panels and Expose Motherboard

  • Use the T5 screwdriver to remove all protective cover panels across the board.
  • Work from the right to the left side of the motherboard to expose internal connectors.
  • This includes prepping Wi-Fi antenna, keyboard, backlight, speaker, USB-C, MagSafe, aux ports, and LCD connections for unplugging.

Unplug Connectors and Cables

  • Use a spudger to carefully disconnect all motherboard cables: keyboard/backlight, speaker ports, USB ports, LCD hinge sensor, Wi-Fi antenna, and logic board connectors.
  • Disconnect center fans and cooling system connectors last for full exposure.

Remove Logic Board Mounting Hardware

  • Use a 4.5mm hex head to remove the standoffs holding the motherboard.
  • Remove 9 screws from the Wi-Fi bracket using a PL1 screwdriver.
  • Switch to a T3 to remove two additional screws from either side of the Wi-Fi module.

Remove Display Assembly Hardware

  • Use a T3 to remove the LCD retention bracket screws.
  • Switch to a T5 to remove hinge cover screws and pull covers downward and out.
  • Carefully lift and remove the Wi-Fi assembly.

Extract the Motherboard

  • Use a T5 screwdriver to remove screws anchoring the motherboard housing.
  • Switch to a T8 to remove two side screws and gently pry up the motherboard.
  • Begin lifting from the left-hand side for a safer extraction path, as it is tightly lodged between components.

Remove Cooling Fans

  • Use a T5 screwdriver to remove fan screws.
  • Switch to T3 for the smaller interior screws.
  • Remove both left and right fans once screws are out.

Disassemble Left and Right I/O Ports

  • Use T5 to loosen the screws holding the USB-C and aux ports on both sides.
  • Disconnect the MagSafe charging port, noting the two T2 screws securing it to the chassis.

Remove Touch ID Sensor

  • Switch to a T3 to loosen the bracket holding the Touch ID module.
  • Peel back the rubber cover, then remove two additional screws underneath with the T3.
  • Use a spudger to break adhesive holding it to the case.

Remove Trackpad

  • Use a T5 screwdriver to unscrew all trackpad mounting screws.
  • Make sure every screw is removed before attempting to lift it out to avoid damage.
  • Take care when threading the trackpad cable during removal.

Free the LCD Assembly

  • Use a T8 to remove six hinge screws on both sides of the screen.
  • Open the unit about 45 degrees and feed the trackpad cable through the hinge space.
  • Adjust the retention bar, pull the cable free, and gently open the unit to about 90 degrees to pop the hinges out of their slots.
