Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 15″ (S1873) Repair Overview

OVERVIEW:

In today’s repair guide, we walk you through disassembling a Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 (2019 model). This Surface Laptop requires internal access through the keyboard deck instead of the bottom panel. We carefully cover the process, from opening the device to removing the screen and motherboard. This detailed guide ensures you can follow along and understand each step with ease. Whether you’re replacing a screen, SSD, or other internal components, we’ve got you covered.

REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 2–3 HOURS to complete and is of ADVANCED difficulty, requiring strong technical skills, careful handling of ribbon cables, and experience with delicate component disassembly.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a Torx screwdriver set (T3, T6 sizes), a plastic pry tool for lifting the keyboard, a small flat tool for adhesive removal, and a spudger for safely disconnecting delicate connectors.

Remove the Keyboard Assembly

  • Locate the hidden screws under the rubber feet and carefully unscrew them using a Torx driver.
  • Use a plastic pry tool to lift the keyboard assembly; it’s held by magnets and an attached ribbon cable.
  • Gently detach the ribbon cable and set the keyboard and touchpad unit aside.

Remove Protective Covers and SSD

  • Carefully pry up the metallic covers; be cautious as edges can be sharp.
  • Unscrew the T3 screws securing the SSD and gently remove the small M.2 SSD from its slot.
  • Keep track of all screws using a magnetic tray, as magnets around the frame may attract them.

Disconnect and Remove Charger Connector

  • Locate the charger connector assembly and carefully lift it out of place.
  • Set the charger connector aside in a safe spot to avoid losing small parts.

Remove Heat Sink and Fan Assembly

  • Disconnect the fan ribbon cable carefully by pulling it straight out.
  • Unscrew and lift the heat sink, which may resist due to thermal paste adhesion.
  • Set the heat sink and fan assembly aside on a clean surface.

Take out the Speakers

  • Locate the left and right speakers and gently pry them out of the housing.
  • Disconnect any attached cables as you remove each speaker.
  • Place the speakers aside, keeping them organized for reassembly.

Remove Additional Covers and Antenna Bar

  • Remove additional small protective covers by prying them from one corner and lifting carefully.
  • Unscrew and disconnect the antenna bar cable and antenna assembly.
  • Keep the antenna bar separated from other parts to prevent confusion.

Disconnect Display Connectors

  • Locate and remove spacer bars covering display cable connections.
  • Pry up display cable connectors using a spudger, carefully lifting them away from the board.
  • Remove all necessary screws to free the display assembly.

Remove the Screen

  • Support the display with one hand while unscrewing the final T6 screws securing it.
  • Lift the screen up and away gently once screws are fully removed.
  • Set the display aside or replace it if it’s the component you’re servicing.

Remove Additional Motherboard Connectors

  • Remove any covers protecting the connectors near the motherboard.
  • Unscrew any remaining screws around the motherboard area.
  • Detach all connectors gently, ensuring no cables are snagged.

Take away the Motherboard

  • After ensuring all screws and cables are free, lift the motherboard carefully out of the housing.
  • Inspect both sides for any remaining connections or damage.
  • Set the motherboard aside on an anti-static mat.

Remove the Audio Jack Connector

  • Find and carefully disconnect the audio jack connector.
  • Remove the connector completely and place it with the other small parts.

Battery Note

  • The battery is strongly adhered to the frame; Microsoft recommends not removing it.
  • If battery removal is necessary, check out the Surface Laptop 4 teardown guide for additional instructions.
