REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 1.5 TO 2 HOURS to complete and is of ADVANCED difficulty, requiring careful handling of delicate internal components, thermal paste application, and cable management.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a Phillips screwdriver, a plastic pry tool, soft plastic prying tools for removing adhesive bezels and LCDs, thermal paste for reinstallation, and isopropyl alcohol for cleaning off old paste. Having Kapton tape on hand is also helpful for securing certain cables.

Remove the Bottom Cover

  • Remove all Phillips head screws around the perimeter of the bottom cover. Note the center screw is shorter than the others.
  • Use a plastic pry tool to carefully separate and lift the bottom cover off.
  • Set the cover aside and move on to the internal components.

Disconnect the Battery

  • Locate the battery connector and unplug it to prevent any power to the unit while working.
  • Confirm the battery is fully disconnected before continuing with disassembly.

Disconnect Internal Cables

  • Unplug the Wi-Fi antenna cables at the bottom section.
  • Remove the Kapton tape above the left-side fan and unplug the left fan.
  • Unplug the central cooling fan and the right-side fan.
  • Flip up the retention bracket for the LCD cable to free it.

Remove CPU Fan Screws and RAM Shield

  • Unscrew the two screws on either side of the CPU fan assembly.
  • Peel back tape covering the RAM shield and remove the shield to expose more screws.

Remove Heat Sink Screws

  • Unscrew the five numbered screws on the heat sink assembly. These are captive screws but can be fully removed for safety.
  • Carefully remove the heat sink. It may be stuck due to thermal paste and pads.

Unplug the Webcam and LCD Cables

  • Locate the webcam and microphone cables. Unplug them and remove the tape holding them in place.
  • Use a plastic pry to gently pull the cables free from their adhesive.

Remove LCD Mount Screws

  • Unscrew the six screws (three on each hinge) that secure the LCD to the chassis.
  • Open the laptop to begin separating the LCD assembly from the rest of the body.

Separate the Top Case and Access the LCD Panel

  • Carefully remove the top case and set it aside.
  • Use a soft plastic pry tool to begin lifting the glued bezel from around the screen.
  • Peel it off completely to reveal the internal hinges and LCD assembly.

Disconnect and Remove the Damaged LCD

  • Tilt the LCD to access the bottom cables and unplug them.
  • Use the pry tool to loosen the adhesive underneath the LCD.
  • Peel back the tape securing the LCD cable and unplug it.

Prepare for New LCD Installation

  • Clean off all leftover adhesive from the frame.
  • Lay down new adhesive strips in preparation for the new screen.

Install New LCD and Reassemble Bezel

  • Plug the LCD cable into the new panel, close the clasp, and secure it with tape.
  • Lay the new LCD into place and peel off the protective film.
  • Align and press the bezel back onto the screen, using the top and webcam as alignment guides.

Reattach Top Case and Align Hinges

  • Place the top case back onto the body and carefully close the hinges.
  • Ensure all cable routes are correct and not pinched.
  • Plug in the LCD cable and secure the retention bracket.

Clean and Apply New Thermal Paste

  • Clean old thermal paste from the heat sink and chips using isopropyl alcohol.
  • Apply a fresh layer of thermal paste on the CPU and GPU.

Reinstall Heat Sink and Connect Fans

  • Lay the heat sink back into position and route the Wi-Fi cables correctly.
  • Plug in the left-side cooling fans before proceeding to ease installation.
  • Begin tightening the numbered screws in order to apply proper pressure.

Final Internal Reassembly

  • Reconnect Wi-Fi antenna cables and reapply Kapton tape for security.
  • Plug in all fans and secure them with their screws.
  • Place the RAM shield back on and reconnect the battery.

Close Up and Test the Laptop

  • Snap the bottom case back into place and secure it with screws, starting with the small center one.
  • Plug in the charger and power on the laptop to confirm the screen works and the battery charges properly.

CONCLUSION:

Replacing the LCD on an MSI GE66 Raider involves careful disassembly and reassembly, but following each detailed step ensures a successful outcome. This repair covers everything from internal disconnection to final testing. Be sure to take your time with cable routing and thermal paste application. If you follow this guide precisely, your laptop should be good as new. Thank you for watching and happy repairing!
