The New Standard for Workstations – Introducing the Cubical Commander

OVERVIEW:

In this guide, we will walk you through the step-by-step process of assembling the Cubicle Commander, a compact and efficient workstation PC designed for office environments. This build features an AMD Ryzen 5 7600 processor, a Gigabyte UD AX A620 ITX motherboard, and a 1TB M.2 SSD, among other high-performance components. The small form factor ensures minimal desk space usage while maintaining upgradeability for long-term use. Whether you’re assembling a new unit for yourself or setting up multiple workstations for a business, this guide will provide you with the necessary instructions to complete the build efficiently.

REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This repair is estimated to take about 2 to 3 hours to complete and is of INTERMEDIATE difficulty, requiring careful handling of components and proper cable management.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a Phillips screwdriver, an M.2 screw (included with the motherboard), a plastic spudger for handling components safely, and zip ties for cable management. A power supply tester can also be useful to ensure all connections are properly seated before powering on the system.

Unbox and Prepare the Components

  • Remove the motherboard, CPU, RAM, and SSD from their packaging.
  • Keep all necessary accessories, including screws and antennas, in a safe place.
  • Lay everything out on an anti-static surface to prevent damage.

Deploy the CPU

  • Open the CPU socket on the motherboard by lifting the retention arm.
  • Align the gold triangle on the CPU with the corresponding mark on the motherboard socket.
  • Gently place the CPU into the socket and lower the retention arm to secure it.

Place the CPU Cooler

  • Remove the stock mounting brackets if necessary.
  • Align the included AMD cooler with the mounting points on the motherboard.
  • Tighten the screws in a cross pattern to evenly distribute pressure.
  • Plug the CPU fan cable into the designated header on the motherboard.

Install the M.2 SSD

  • Locate the M.2 slot on the motherboard.
  • Insert the M.2 SSD at a 30-degree angle and press it down.
  • Secure it using the M.2 screw provided with the motherboard.

Install the RAM

  • Open the RAM slots by pressing down on the retention clips.
  • Align the RAM module with the slot, ensuring the notches match.
  • Firmly press down until the module clicks into place.

Prepare the Case

  • Remove the top cover and side panels of the case.
  • Install the rear IO shield into the designated cutout.
  • Position the motherboard inside the case, ensuring alignment with the standoffs.

Secure the Motherboard

  • Use the screws provided with the case to mount the motherboard securely.
  • Ensure the rear IO ports are properly aligned with the IO shield.

Connect Front Panel Cables

  • Locate the front panel connectors for power, reset, USB, and audio.
  • Refer to the motherboard manual to correctly connect each cable.
  • Plug in the rear case fan to the appropriate motherboard header.

Install the Power Supply

  • Remove the case’s power supply mounting bracket.
  • Attach the power supply to the bracket using the included screws.
  • Feed the necessary power cables through the back of the case.

Connect Power Cables

  • Attach the 24-pin power connector to the motherboard.
  • Connect the 8-pin CPU power cable to the designated motherboard header.
  • Secure the case’s power button and front IO cables to the motherboard.

Manage Cables and Close the Case

  • Use zip ties to neatly organize excess cables.
  • Ensure airflow is not obstructed by cables.
  • Reattach the case panels and ensure all connections are secure.

Power On and Test the System

  • Plug in the power cord and switch on the power supply.
  • Press the power button and verify that the system boots up.
  • Install the necessary software, including Windows and business applications.

CONCLUSION:

This build provides an efficient and compact workstation solution that balances performance, upgradeability, and ease of assembly. With an AMD Ryzen processor and ITX form factor, the Cubicle Commander is ideal for offices looking to maximize desk space while maintaining computing power. Ensuring proper installation and cable management will help optimize performance and longevity.
