Inside Our Studio – A Deep Dive into Our Recording PC Build & Components


OVERVIEW:

Building a custom recording and editing PC requires careful selection of components to ensure smooth performance and efficiency. In this guide, we assemble a high-performance Micro ATX build featuring an Intel Core i5-12600 CPU, GTX 1660 Ti GPU, and 32GB of DDR4 RAM. The setup includes an NVMe SSD for fast storage and a reliable cooling system to maintain optimal temperatures. This build is housed in a compact Asus Micro ATX case, designed for airflow and ease of installation. Follow along as we go through each step of the assembly process.


REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

This build is estimated to take about 2 to 3 hours to complete and is of INTERMEDIATE difficulty, requiring basic knowledge of PC components and careful cable management for an efficient setup.


STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this build, you will need a Phillips screwdriver, a plastic card for safe component handling, a thermal pad for the NVMe SSD, and a power supply installation bracket. Proper cable management tools such as zip ties or Velcro straps can help with organization.


Installing the CPU

  • Open the motherboard box and locate the CPU socket.
  • Line up the triangle on the CPU with the triangle on the socket, gently place it in, and secure the retention bar.
  • Remove the socket cover and store it in the box for safekeeping.

Installing RAM

  • Open the first and second RAM slots by pushing the retention clips outward.
  • Align the notch on the RAM stick with the slot and firmly press down until it clicks into place.
  • Repeat the process for the second RAM stick.

Deploy the NVMe SSD

  • Unscrew the top PCIe slot cover for the NVMe SSD.
  • Remove the cover for the thermal pad to ensure proper heat dissipation.
  • Insert the NVMe SSD at an angle, push it down, and secure it with the screw.

Place the CPU Cooler

  • Attach the backplate to the motherboard using the provided standoff posts and rubber O-rings.
  • Secure the mounting brackets with the pointed ends facing inward toward the CPU.
  • Remove the plastic cover from the cooler to expose the pre-applied thermal paste.
  • Mount the cooler onto the CPU, ensuring even pressure by tightening screws in a cross pattern.
  • Attach the fan using the provided clips and connect the cooling fan cable to the CPU fan header.

Preparing the Case

  • Remove the side panel and identify the mounting points for the motherboard.
  • Install the rear IO shield by pressing it into the designated slot.
  • Align the motherboard with the standoffs and secure it using the included screws.

Connecting Front Panel Cables

  • Route the front panel cables through the case and connect the USB 3.0, USB Type-C, and power button connectors to the motherboard.
  • Plug in the HD audio connector, ensuring alignment with the motherboard’s pin configuration.
  • Secure any loose cables to improve airflow and organization.

Installing the Graphics Card

  • Remove the PCIe slot covers for the GPU installation.
  • Align the gold PCIe connector with the slot on the motherboard and press down until it clicks.
  • Secure the graphics card with screws using the slots removed earlier.

Installing the Wi-Fi Card

  • Insert the Wi-Fi card into the bottom PCIe slot.
  • Secure it using the screw from the removed PCIe slot cover.

Position the Power Supply

  • Attach the power supply to the installation bracket using the included screws.
  • Slide the power supply into the case, ensuring proper alignment with the case mounting points.
  • Secure it using screws and connect the power extension cable to the rear panel.

Cable Management and Final Connections

  • Connect the CPU power cable to the 8-pin EPS header.
  • Attach the 24-pin ATX power cable to the motherboard.
  • Plug in the PCIe power cable to the GPU.
  • Route and secure all cables to maintain a clean and organized build.

Powering On and Final Checks

  • Plug the power cable into the power supply and ensure the switch is turned on.
  • Press the power button and check that all fans and components function correctly.
  • Confirm that the system boots successfully into the BIOS.
