Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 Teardown – Disassembly & Repair Guide

OVERVIEW:

In this teardown, we take a closer look at the new Samsung Galaxy Fold 5, comparing it side by side with its predecessor, the Galaxy Fold 4. While there aren’t too many hardware differences between the two devices, the updated hinge on the Fold 5 stands out as a significant improvement. This hinge is flatter and simpler, making it less prone to durability issues, though some dust ingress is inevitable. The teardown dives into the internals of the Galaxy Fold 5, revealing key differences, such as its Snapdragon chip, Flex cables, and camera layout.

REPAIR TIME & SKILL LEVEL:

Repair Time & Skill Level: This repair is estimated to take about 2-3 hours to complete and is of INTERMEDIATE difficulty, requiring some experience with mobile device repairs, especially handling delicate components like Flex cables and cameras.

STEPS:

Tools You Need:

For this repair, you will need a heating mat set between 70 to 90 degrees Celsius, a Phillips screwdriver (1.5mm), a suction cup for screen removal, isopropyl alcohol to loosen adhesive, a plastic card for safe glass removal, a plastic spudger for prying components without damage, and a pair of tweezers to handle small components.

Removing the Front Glass:

  • Use a suction cup to safely lift the front cover.
  • Apply heat to soften the adhesive and avoid damaging the cables.
  • Gently use a plastic card to remove the screen without harming the flex cable attached to it.

Dealing with the Back Glass:

  • Apply heat and isopropyl alcohol to loosen the adhesive on the back panel.
  • Slowly pry open the back glass using a plastic card, taking care to avoid damaging the internal components.
  • Carefully remove the back glass to reveal the cameras, wireless charging coil, and 5G wireless components.

Accessing the Internal Components:

  • Use a Phillips screwdriver (1.5mm) to remove 23 screws securing the internal components.
  • Detach the flex cables carefully to avoid damaging any connectors.
  • Remove the plastic faceplates to expose the motherboard and daughterboard.

Disconnecting the Motherboard and Cameras:

  • Remove the screws holding the motherboard in place.
  • Disconnect the flex cables attached to the cameras, ensuring that they remain intact during removal.
  • The main motherboard houses the Snapdragon chip, which is similar to the Flip 5’s configuration.

Working with the Sub PBA (Sub-Printed Board Assembly):

  • After removing the motherboard, access the sub PBA board, which contains the Type-C port and 5G antenna.
  • Remove any screws and connectors carefully to avoid damaging these sensitive components.

Handling the Front-Facing Camera and Other Components:

  • Detach the front-facing camera and ensure the connectors are free from any adhesive.
  • Carefully inspect the remaining parts, making sure no dust or debris enters sensitive areas.

Closing Up the Device:

  • Once all components are removed or replaced, begin reassembling the device in reverse order.
  • Ensure all flex cables are reconnected properly before screwing the components back into place.
  • Carefully snap the back glass and front cover back into position, ensuring the device is sealed without any gaps.

CONCLUSION:

This teardown of the Samsung Galaxy Fold 5 highlights the major differences compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy Fold 4. While the two phones share many similarities, the updated hinge design and internal changes make the Fold 5 a more durable and refined device. By following the step-by-step guide, you can successfully repair or replace internal components, giving your device a new lease on life.
