MacBook Pro 13″ A1502 Battery & Speaker Replacement Guide (2013–2014 Model)

In this repair guide, we’ll walk through a detailed teardown and replacement of a 2013 MacBook Pro 13-inch (Model A1502). The unit arrived with a blown speaker, battery issues, and missing bottom feet. Our goal is to replace the speakers, install a new battery, and attach new bottom case feet. This guide provides a comprehensive, step-by-step tutorial to complete the job safely and effectively. Let’s get started.

STEPS:

Tools You Need

For this repair, you will need a pentalobe screwdriver to open the MacBook casing, a spudger to safely disconnect internal components, a T5 screwdriver for removing and reinstalling screws, isopropyl alcohol to soften battery adhesive, a plastic scraper for cleanup, and double-sided adhesive strips for securing the new battery.


Remove the Bottom Case

  • Remove all pentalobe screws from the MacBook’s bottom case.
  • Carefully lift the bottom panel to expose the internal components.
  • Set the bottom panel and screws aside for reinstallation later.

Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a plastic spudger to safely disconnect the battery connector.
  • Ensure no power is running to the device before continuing.
  • Always unplug the battery at the start of any internal repair.

Remove the Speakers

  • Use a T5 screwdriver to remove three screws securing each speaker.
  • Disconnect the right speaker by gently prying the connector with a spudger.
  • Remove the I/O board cable using a T5 screwdriver to access the left speaker.

Remove the I/O Board Flex Cable

  • Unscrew and detach two retention brackets securing the cable.
  • Carefully disconnect the I/O board flex cable from the board.
  • Set the brackets and cable aside for reassembly.

Remove the Speakers

  • Pull out the left speaker after unplugging it from its connector.
  • Repeat the process to remove the right speaker.
  • Keep both old speakers aside and prep for new ones.

Prepare Battery for Removal

  • Apply isopropyl alcohol around the battery to soften the adhesive.
  • Allow the alcohol to soak and begin loosening the glue.
  • In the meantime, locate and unscrew the battery daughter board with a T5 driver.

Remove the Battery

  • After alcohol has softened the adhesive, use a flat-edge spudger to lift the battery.
  • Gently pry the battery from the top case without bending it.
  • Remove and discard the old battery safely.

Clean Remaining Adhesive

  • Apply more isopropyl alcohol to leftover glue areas.
  • Use a plastic scraper to remove adhesive remnants from the case.
  • Make sure the surface is smooth and clean for the new battery.

Install New Speakers

  • Install the new left and right speakers into their positions.
  • Use the T5 screwdriver to secure them in place.
  • These components also help align the battery, so install them first.

Apply Adhesive for Battery

  • Lay down double-sided adhesive strips inside the battery compartment.
  • Peel off the protective backing from the adhesive strips.
  • Ensure all strips are laid flat and evenly spaced.

Install the New Battery

  • Position the battery by sliding the left side under the speaker first.
  • Align the battery so the two plastic notches match the bottom case holes.
  • Once aligned, press down to secure it into the adhesive.

Secure the Battery

  • Use a T5 screwdriver to screw down the battery where needed.
  • Ensure all parts are lined up correctly and tightly held in place.
  • Battery should sit flush and not shift when lightly moved.

Reconnect the I/O Board Cable

  • Plug the I/O board flex cable back into place.
  • Reattach the two retention brackets and secure them with T5 screws.
  • Confirm the cable is fully inserted and secure.

Reconnect the Battery

  • Plug the battery connector back into the logic board.
  • Double-check that the connection is firm and correctly aligned.
  • Avoid powering the machine until all reassembly steps are done.

Reinstall the Bottom Case

  • Place the bottom panel back onto the MacBook.
  • Use pentalobe screws to secure it, placing the two smallest screws in the back two holes.
  • Press down gently to ensure the bottom case fits snugly.

Power On and Test

  • Flip the MacBook over and connect it to power.
  • Wait for the green light, then check for the orange light to indicate charging.
  • Power on the unit to verify everything is functioning properly.
